This whole scamming malarkey is quite worrying. It's fraud, clear and simple, and the sentencing tariff should correspond appropriately with those found guilty. Sorry, rant over!

I have been working through images on Gumtree and EBAY and reported 7 more so far and more to go. I have also e mailed their safety e mail address identifying this concern. All were London locations and yet ebay were Deven, Liverpool and all over and for much more money than gumtree. I will see if they reply
NOW TOTAL of 13 including whispers- All showing London address and all very low prices. What is next action we can do as this is P**** me off

The water-marked pictures is a step in the right direction, and is something the websites themselves could easily introduce. We use a similar software to copyright protect artwork to stop illegal distribution. They could even add serial numbers to correspond to the advertisement, etc.
In addition, they have a duty of care to establish vendors are who they say they are. Not sure how this would be done, but cross-referencing addresses, credit card information and other personal information is par for the course these days.

I have suggested this in my email, what law can we throw at them at Gumtree, this stands out a mile and they should have seen some of them if not all of them, sudden rise in ads for boats all in one area and ads placed all in a short period of time
here is auto reply from Gumtree
Thank you for contacting Gumtree. This is an automated reply to let you know we have received your report and our dedicated Safety team will be taking a look at it very shortly. They will get back to you to discuss further.
Your case number is xxxxxxxxx, please quote this if you contact us by phone or live chat, so that we don't duplicate our contact with you.
We are 100% committed to keeping Gumtree safe. We act on all reports that we receive, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Please bear with us if we don’t reply back to you while we focus on taking action to stop the problem you have reported.
If you have asked us for advice or help then you should hear back from us very shortly. We aim to reply to all questions within just a few hours. Thank you for your patience.
In the meantime, here is some of our top safety advice:
1) Keep things local by meeting face to face and seeing the goods before you buy them.
2) For your personal safety always meet in a public place, and if possible take someone with you.
3) If a seller is reluctant to meet, or requests payment up front, then proceed with caution. Especially avoid money transfer services (e.g. Western Union or Moneygram) and paying with e-money services such as UKash.
You can find more advice in our dedicated Stay Safe section where you can also find out more about what we are doing to keep Gumtree safe.
Bye for now
The Gumtree Safety team

And an other Tornado rib boat yam 115hp roller trailer in London | Boats, Kayaks & Jet Skis for Sale | Gumtree.com
They seem to remove them quick more than can be said for Boats and outboards website who don't have reported one their and they do nothing.
What can be done? just keep reporting them hope for the best and don't pay for anything until you can lay your hands on it.

The choice of names for the scammer(s) is interesting. Any criminal psychologists out there, or is it simply a case of watching too many episodes of CSI Miami?
Cliff, Damian, Dan, Dave, Gregory, Jamie, Matt, Mesael, Mike, Ray
Mesael stands out immediately. Doesn't seem like a typing error, and goes against the grain in terms of the other fictitious names used. A calling card perhaps?
Quick search online and I've traced the name Mesael to the Phillipines on Facebook. Seems to be used by both men and women. Quick search on Twitter reveals one name, only one post and seems to originate in the Middle East.
Looks like this is going to be a tough one. Anyone got Tom Barnaby's number?

Is the answer not Ribnet? It's great that we can currently advertise our boats for free on here, but would it not make more sense to charge a fee that is then used to pay a trusted Ribnet member to make a physical check to verify that the boat actually exists and is owned (or at least in the possession) of the seller. Not every boat would need to be physically verified of course, I'm thinking here of well known members boats, but with members pretty much all over the UK at least, such a scheme could work and also attract new members to the forum.
