River Alde

Having a week at the end of May in Aldeburgh and wonder about packing the Zodiac and outboard into the car for a scoot up the Alde. I have been given the number of the boatyard there and seen the slip on Boatlaunch.... but I would like to hear from anyone who gets out in that area.

Ideally I'd like to launch into the river off shingle somewhere so I'm not constrained by the costs/times of a boatyard.

I'm not sure of River Alde, but further south is the River Deben (approx 30mins drive). I can give you lots of info on where to launch etc on R Deben, but can't help with R Alde. From visiting the area on weekends with the family, there is a large sailing club. Maybe somebody on here knows somebody who knows etc.
Let me know if you want info on R Deben.
Best of luck with quest for info on R Adle.
Bye the way if you get any info, let me know also!
Gerry

From memory ie 20yrs ago, one mid summer weekend, we launched from Orford motored down the river and camped on the shingle bank somewhere. Orford had a great slip but just beware that river runs like the clappers both in and out.

We were woken up by the bird warden as we had camped by mistake in the wrong place. I remember the weekend because despite it being mid summer it was freezing with a cold N wind just like now, the only time I think I was warm was either in the tent or almost sitting on the camp fire!

Quite an interesting place though, well worth a visit!

Good luck

you may get some info by looking at www.eastcoastrivers.com

certainly Orford is a possible but at Aldeburgh itself I think you will need to watch the tide

I havn't been for a few years so not sure of the actuals

I'dve thought you'd be able to launch off the shingle near the sailing club in Aldeburgh or even at their slip if you ask nicely. Do be aware that the tide runs at 6 knots or more on the Alde and the entrance to the river, particularly in wind over tide conditions is not somewhere you want to be in a small inflatable! A run up to Snape would be a nice day out in a SIB though.

Did you get any further info?
How did you get on?
Give some feedback, as maybe a future day out.
Thanks,
Gerry
