RNLI Volunteers

If given the chance who here would like to volunteer to join an RNLI Lifeboat crew or other rescue service?

I would but I'm a bit far from the sea.

I'd love to, and have wanted to for a few years now.

However being a family man who also needs to earn a crust, I can't commit regular time to anything.

I did do just before I was 17, joined the crew at 17 with my parents consent, best thing I ever did!

Hmm, how to put this sensitively, your not eligible to crew the ribs:

be under 45 years old (inshore lifeboat) or 55 (all weather lifeboat)

I surprised my wife a few years ago when I answered just that question with a "probably not". And its not because I don't want to help people. And its not because the thought of endangering my own life. Its because the thought of my precious time being interupted for trivial nonsence (not the real rescues). Do I really want to waste a sunday afternoon because someone thought a channel marker was an up turned dingy? Or because someone didn't check the tide times and can't be bothered to wait till the causway dries out again etc... all fine if you are sitting doing nothing but sods law they will interefere with normal family or work life after a while!

Pete

You really can go off people you know.
To crew the RIBs I have 4 years to join up, get trained, and get some time in. I had a very hard paper round as a kid that made me look like this

Nasher.

Pete
the age limit set by the rnli is owing to the hammering that the crews get and the physical stresses the body goes through ie knee joints ,the age limit on alb is only now advisery owing to age discrim laws or so i have been told .anyhow we all have to step aside at some point to let some one else have a go .

I'd love to - maybe age would be a problem being only 18 but it'd be great to fill my days off of uni

Why is this being asked anyway, don't suppose the offers up?

Currently crew for a rescue service and live some distance away from the sea.

If my situation was to change e.g. move back down to Cornwall to harass my family, then i'd probably look into either offering myself up as a volunteer or look into going into the Coastguard.

For now, happy to do what I can if and when I can.

Lifeboat crew

Would also join if I lived close enough to a station. I think these guys do a great job.

Did formerly join an inshore lifeboat for a short period but then moved so that was the end of that.

One of the best things i have ever done. been on an RNLI inshore boat for 6 years 2 as a helmsman every aspect is good from the guys you are on the crew with to helping out in ANYWAY you can.

There is no better feeling in the world to come back to the station knowing that you have just saved a life.

I'd like to join some day, hopefully plan on moving somewhere closer to the sea, currently no use in West London, not close enough even to the London base.

Doug - drop me a note and come down and meet us at Hamble! We run a rota for weekend cover when the duty crew are on station all day, currently we have crew from well outside the patch because we and they can plan availability. Your knowledge would be very useful!
