‘Rona Bank’ – Where is it?
Not really sure which forum this should go in.....
Can anyone tell me where Rona Bank is? I’ve looked on maps and also my chart software (Garmin) and can’t find it.
Rona is an island above Raasay in the Inner Sound (south Minch) so my assumption is it’s close to there……..
If anyone uses any other types of chart software I’d be interested if you could give me the location of it.
Thanks
Julie

It looks like it's just north of the Island of Rona, in the North Minch. I would guess it would be shown on an Admiralty Chart of the area.

A guess.................
As the island of Rona is on a steep, long crest of a very deep channel on either side, and to the north, maybe the bank is a term for that geographic feature.
Certainly on my Navionics chip (with Navplanner) I can find no specific mention of it.
Is there something else perhaps.............like you know of a certain wreck?

I have heard it's good spot for whales..... 80% of the time I get lucky at with Minkes round the RIB at Rubha Hunish (top of Skye). Thought about trying somewhere different, but I want a high probability of seeing them.......
I usually launch at Staffin to go there, so instead of heading north I could just head south east-ish.
Maybe it's such a good spot it's a secret, so no-one can locate it

Julie,
Just read thru Martin Lawrence's Pilot-his chapter on Rona makes no mention of it anywhere.
Best of luck with the whale watching.

Garfish you can have the other 20%!
I'm in Gairloch a few days before I move onto Skye, so maybe I'll have a chat to the guy who runs the cruises, or follow him!

Hmmm.
Seems that location is on the opposite side of the island to Eilean Garbh, but level with it. To the east of the light on the coast, just outside a tiny, unamed rock/island.

So just past the entrace to Loch Torridon... that's another place I want to get into from Gairloch.
I hope the weather improves in the next few days otherwise I won't be going far at all, it's been pants here for a couple of weeks!

Well it should turn soon then... like on Saturday, by the time I get up there! I don't mind cold and damp, just don't want it too stormy! Otherwise I'll be wearing the dry suit constantly whether I'm on the boat or not..... set a new trend!
And I'm not gonna get into welsh bashing! I may make them cry

The way it is at the moment , I'd keep it on in bed not good for relationships .. but .. getting out on the boat is far more important, innit ?
BTW are you staying in Gairloch ?

Yes - well Charlestown, Old Inn. Plenty of real ales, good food, and dead close to the slipway/pontoons.
And no.... sleeping in a dry suit is JUST WRONG!!!!! But whatever floats your boat

Agreed .. the wellies dont half make a mess of the bottom sheet
That new bit of concrete at Gairloch harbour .. is it any good ? has it actually extended the slip any at low tide ?

Or things get stuck in the zip!
The slipway - I used it last year, after avoiding it for a while after it was washed out.
It was fine. Possibly slightly longer than it was (unless that's an illusion as it's now smooth), but I still had to pick the right time of tide, and approach carefully when recovering......

Ah ... a couple of years ago I watched two unfortunate chaps launch something looking like a little Drascombe,.... they'd backed the trailer into the water, but it fell off the end of the slip .. then they tried to push the boat off .. but it wasnt deep enough and it hit all the submerged rocks half way off the trailer , and it was left with its bow in the air, stuck on the trailer, which they couldnt budge because it had gone 'orf' the slip .. a total launch disaster, a perilous slip if ever there was one.. I had me a little but then I thought .. aye .. it might happen to me one of these days poor guys

Gairloch slipway
On proper inspection (spring tides), it definately seems longer, and there's no big drop now. Just a couple of inches onto stones...... (not huge rocks).
Weathers still pants though!!!!!!
