Hi,
My brother and I have just paid our deposit and will be joining the trip in our ribcraft 4.8 'TRU-BLU' with 60hp yam four stroke.
kits almost all ready and just working out the logistics of accommodation with our parents following us round the country in the car. Camping is our preffered option or maybe hostels to try and save costs.
Look forward to seeing you all there!

Bloomin eck! So you need 2 weeks minimum as you are doing 10 days. I'd not want to be waiting for it before departing and ?simpler to return once home than when trying to get to the ferry... so you may need 3 weeks. But at 2 weeks thats £150 + 20% = £180 +£45 delivery (I bet they add vat to that too). £225 + return lets assume £45 as well £270... for TWO WEEKS!
You could have a McMurdo Smart Find for £327.50 from yachtshop.co.uk delivered (I assume programmed). That price diffrence is the thrid week...
That may not be the cheapest possible it was just a quick google..
If a FastFind PLB is sufficient you could do it cheaper than the rent and outbound post...

Agree with you - for total rent and shipping cost it is already worth it to consider to buy one ..
That is why I ordered this week a GME MT403G for 449,-€ ..

TRU -BLU Plans for Round Ireland
Tru-Blu – Round Ireland Challenge 2013
Dear All,
Thought we would share some of our plans for the summer.
4.8m Ribcraft, 60hp, 50lt internal tanks.
1. We will be accompanied by our parents in a vehicle which will cross from Fishguard –Rosslare
2. Plan to take the trailer (and possibly the boat) across on ferry as planning to return to UK via N.Ireland to Scotland.
3 Hope to leave trailer in Kilmore Quay rather than tow around ;but it will also be on right side of water if mechanical problems or prolonged bad weather cause abandonment. (Hoping organisers can confirm storage options!)
4. We need to keep cost down, so camping is only suitable option. Camping also gives flexibility should weather prove a challenge. Hopefully with camping gear in vehicle we can set and break camp more conveniently. (Should anybody else need assistance with transportation of camping gear then that may be possible?)
5. Camping sites seem relatively sparse in Ireland and not a lot of obvious choice close to marinas, so if anybody can advise any locations that would be helpful. Wild camping is a possibility but after a day on the water the comfort of a decent shower etc. would be welcome). Have used Irish Tourist board site, and foreign section of, UK Campsite’s website for research.
6. Need more information from organisers on fuel logistics but if need be we will run jerry cans ,although I am sure transporting 50-60 litre + of unleaded might be an issue for police if they choose to make an issue of it! (any thoughts on this ).
7. Equipment. We are seeking to raise money for AYME a charity that helps young people with ME and have been able to secure some commercial sponsorship for some equipment. Need still to obtain a lightpole/nav lights, drysuits and windscreen. Organisers list of equipment suppliers a little sparse on offerings we feel.
8. Insurance. Our boat insurance (Navigator and General ) only covers us for 12 miles off shore ( anywhere round Europe). Is this common and does anybody have any views on how the middle of the irish sea crossing can be covered economically.

A few ideas based on my limited experience.
Firstly, great on you for going for it. We considered carefully if we could afford fuel & more importantly the time to detour from a round brittan this year to include R.I. but for various reasons we are not.
Insurance will be down to boat size and its probably a common limitation on a 5m boat, but would not be expected on a 6 or 7m boat. Speak to insurers about your boat and its equiptment and they will probably extend it without issue. if they wont talk to a new insurer as i had my 5m covered previously for channel crossings etc.
Secondly most marinas will provide toilets and showers. Can you camp on the boat? We made a full cover for our 6m boat and 2 could camp quite comfortably. If this fails then I have unoffically camped rough at lots of marinas in UK and france without issue. If there is grass, we get on with it. If there isnt we've been known to pitch tents on pontoons. My advise here is dont ask because they might say no, once you're pitched and asleep less likely to be asked to move!!

No idea on the law, but in my experience the Gaurds are a lot more laid back than the UK Fuzz. I know of a village with about 10 sailing dinghies that were towed on non road legal trailers (basically launch trollies with a hitch) with the mast up through the village to launch...
PSNI? Not sure. Suggest not filling milk bottles ;-)

all,
FYI
I will probably camp too. I don t really want to explode the budget. First thing if the weather is ok i will sleep on board +/- comfortable or on the potoon. if it s raining maybe camp or find a B&B next the marina, we could share a taxi and reduce costs
fuel : i will only have 2X20L extra tanks, as i have an undertank of 200L. i checked with most marinas and petrol station are around 1 mile or 10 mins next the harbour.
so i will walk too
still have to buy an epirb ...

That's for sure, but not the answer we were looking for.

Wave Height
Today's wave height at Irish West Coast Buoy: 11.3 m. Let's hope that this is not indicative for the sea state experienced during RIPRC 2013 in July/August!
