That's a very good question Pikey. Obviously, to win a race, there would have to BE a race, rather than a Challenge. However, if it HAD been a race, I'm fairly sure that having your boat trailered for a leg would see you disqualified, even if it was a very impressive Mazda that towed it. Getting towed in by a Lifeboat would almost certainly attract a few penalty points too. Of course, the biggest hurdle you'd have to overcome would be not actually being the first across the "finishing line", if there was a finishing line, if it had been a race....

Ahhh! right, I think I'm getting it now. Sooo if it had been a race, which it wasn't, team Linley would have been disqualified, but it wasn't because it wasn't a race, he wouldn't have been the victor, despite "Mazda UK and Linley Swan GP win ten day Powerboat and RIB Round Ireland Challenge 2013" 'cos it wasn't a race...was it?
There was only 1 winner IMHO & he jumped out of his boat half way across the oirish sea, just for some attention. I bet Mazda wish they'd thought of that one

Didn't you know? It wasn't the same boat that got towed in by a lifeboat-during the tow it didn't say Mazda down the toobs.(at least, that's what TLS's facebook page said)
Oddly though, it said it before and after the tow..

Well, according to Tom Linley-Swan's facebook page (or it might have been Linley Swan Racing, whichever one he's decided to be today, he had to reapply the branding after the lifeboat incident....

Aah - well - the first boat to get to back to Kilmore Quay having done all the legs by sea under it's own steam was Hot Lemon VI (probably no surprise there).
More of a surprise would be that Baby Blue was second - but of course being towed for two of the legs (due to lack of engine mount bolts having nuts still attached ) may have had a teeny bit of influence on this, especially as one of them was the long Dingle to Crosshaven day!
Anyway, as we were ahead of the fleet by a couple of days we were outside of the main flotilla so it didn't count anyway as having completed the event..... and it definitely wasn't a race!

Dingle to Crosshaven– 140 miles Tom Montgomery-Swan: The seas were getting rough, so it was clear the race was about to get more difficult. At Rosmoney I made a decision to save time and fuel that saw us cross one of the bigger bays, rather than hug the coastline… It was a move that would save us 35 miles. However, as we headed for open water, the waves were getting big, so I headed for shelter in the Arran islands, the move gave us fuel efficiency and speed, but as the tides changed, the waves grew further. Conditions became horrendous, unlike anything I have seen in the UK, so we turned tail and stayed in Galway. It was a decision made in the interests of safety, but it left us a day behind the fleet. We simply had to catch up, so the next day, I made a decision to go for it… During the run, the wind was up to 75mph and the boat was going vertical as hit it some of the bigger waves. The wind was howling, and there were waterspouts coming off the land onto the sea… this was knife edge stuff and a huge test of the boat’s SKYACTIV inspired design. At this point, we were joined by a lifeboat, in case we needed assistance. The lifeboat was a welcome sight, and though we weren’t in danger, things could have changed very quickly… But as bad as the weather was it also a bit of a blessing, it allowed us to catch up, as the organisers had held the rest of the fleet, waiting for the weather to improve. We were back in with a chance of winning.

What a load of fiction. Do they actually believe the cr*p they're writing?!
Kind of sours the feel of what I thought was a great event and challenge considering the weather.
Also: the magazine had an ad by C Fury to win a leg on one of their boats for the person who gave 3 reasons why they should do it and then get "liked" the most. I was the only entrant and never heard a jot from anyone.
