Rubbing strake???

Anyone got a solution for gluing my rubbing strake onto the Bow so that when I stuff the it doesn't keep falling off? Will post pics tomorrow evening.

Serves him right for getting all shirty when we tried to moor along side him in Ryde. Said he had finished his cup of tea and was about to go. Didn't even offer us a cup.

PM Stephen-RIB. He has glue and will travel. He did not think his repair would last long on my cone, but he was wrong.

Yeh, will take the offending item up to the Church next time nfor the before said Quote!

As I said ealier I'll post pics tonight that better explains things, but basicly where the bottom strake glues onto is the seam of the tubes and is fairly "wavey" so will only glue on the crests.

That's not white pvc stuck to red hypalon, by chance, is it?
Is the glue tacky or hard and brittle?

If not, cut the old adhesive back completely on both surfaces and start over with the gluing process. All the info you need on gluing is on this site. Do a search.
One addition I would make is; to get the very best joint, preglue the surfaces and allow them to cure before going through the normal gluing process.

try removing all old glue ,prime with new glue ,leave for an hour reglue and bond together then tape bottom edge of strake with 2inch tape half on tube half on strake ,phone me on 07815144269 if you need further explanation

Yes it is white PVC and I did pay a "professional" guy to re-stick the strake several weeks ago at a cost of £50 (not bad for 15mins work ). I must admit that I'm not completely happy with the design of the front fender arrangement but didn't expect to strake to come off so quickly after the repair. Will call him back up tomorrow and get him to repair again!

What I'm looking for on this thread are possibly, different ways that I can make a longer term repair, maybe different "heavy duty" Straking around the bow that would give protection and strengh to the bow when stuffing through a wave! Any suggestions please?

Stu, if it aint fixed this time I'll hold you good to your word but am on the twilight of some serious time away with my company and won't be around until Xmas. But if this repair doesn't last this time I will look at a re-design and will probably call Wilks rubbers and see what they suggest, may be a Wave peircing rubber attatchment that makes the waves part to let me though.

Hightower, if done properly it will stay put. A PVC/ hypalon joint requires a different technique. Again do a search, it's all here.
If he only took 15mins, he deliberately ripped you off or he didn't know what he was doing. Or both.

John, phoned the guy that did the work, today! He said that he was suprised that it failed and offered to come back and repair it again (this time it better stay put). He is quite a well known repairer for around these parts and specializes in Rib and inflaterble repairs, so will give him the benefit of the dought this time but if it happens again!!! Trouble is the Rib won't be sea trialed again till Chrismas (Hogmanay (excuse spelling)).

Make sure he knows they are dissimilar materials.

If necessary, introduce him to ribnet.

John, I can always use Ribnet as a "squeeze" for last resort. If ya in the industry you wouldn't want to make an enemy of a Ribnetter would you!! . The guy seemed genuingly upset that his work didn't last, so as they say.....We'll see!

The ONLY glue to use is Bostick 2402 glue. Various company re-brand it and sell it.

The main criteria is to ensure old glue is removed both surfaces, fine sandpaper to increase the surface area, clean using paint thinners then apply a coat to both surfaces. Wait thirty mins or until both are tacky then re-apply and press both surfaces together for as long as possible.

You should spend more time on the preparation than the actual gluing. Dont think about using the boat for at least 48hrs. If its a SIB dont roll it up either! (This is called a SIB Fajita!)

The first time you do it glue seems to get everywhere but you need to make sure you glue to the very edges of the patch. (You can rub it off as it goes hard) Rubber gloves seem to be a bad idea as the hardener melts them.

I've got a similar problem to what you had with the rubbing strake.

I'm going to remove the whole strake and replace it with a new one.

How did you remove all that old glue ?

I have found this and wondered if it would be any use.

Soft nylon rotary brush to remove excess glue. Fits into standard drill
