Scorpion 8.1 Help Wanted Please

Help Please.

Does anyone know this boat? 8.1m Scorpion Sharkey / Sharkeys Revenge.

I am considering buying it and have found conflicting informqtion on the web regarding her age. The current broker says she is a 2002 but ive found an old advert for the same boat claiming 1998.

Its also had two very recent retubes/refits if the posts are correct. Should I be hearing alarm bells? Is the Price good value if it is a 1998.

Will Scorpion be able to help can I trace the hull number, were they sold with hull certification numbers?

Does anyone here have personal experience of this boat please, any information would be greatly recieved.

Thanks all in advance

The last two digits of the hull identification number (HIN) are the year. It should be printed/stamped onto the boat in at least two locations. One being somewhere on the transom. It'll be 12 digits long.

Thanks Tim,

I will certainly be checking all I can. Maybe the broker is bigging it up a bit for a better sale price?

At that age I wouldn't think a 4 year difference in age would make much difference on price. Possibly just an honest mistake? I'd check it out and go from there; if he got something as simple as the age wrong are the other details he's given you about the condition of the boat correct?

Thanks Tim,

Just noticed engine hours in the old advert are 320 and now mysteriously only 200?

I think im gonna have to invest in full marine survey and engine diagnostic to be safe.

Its defiinatly the same engine, can they be "clocked" like cars were?

Thanks for the helpful advice!

Not sure they can, but a new gauge can be fitted, this was my concern when I bought my engine with only 67 hours on it. The gauge(s) were showing signs of UV damage around the edges so I think they are a matching pair of the same age and probably original, but in truth who knows.

Compression test on each cylinder is probably the best test you can do.

BTW - Looks a lovely boat.

I guess you already know this but if the engine was serviced by any main agent, the full service history including hours run is in their main database.

Thanks Ferryman,

No I did not know that. If the Humber offer is rejected then the scorpion still might be worth a look.

The hours will be stored in the engine's ECU. It's possible it had a new ECU which would have zero'd the hours. But as per the above, further details may be obtainable by getting a Honda dealer to plug it in.

Ask to look at the service log for the engine, that would show hours, maybe a mistake or maybe not, if not then walk away.

Not that I want to create confusion but have you seen Bushrider's Scorpion?

I’ve only been in a couple of them but strictly IMO, the Scorpion is a different breed of rib in rough seas!!??

Would have loved a Scorpion, but to be fair to get into a good twin outboard model my budget is just too low.

The QuinQuari Humber 8.5 does it all for me. Twin redundancy of everything set up for serious ofshore passsge.

It makes France and the Channel islands achievable and safe from the Solent with the kids. But to be fair Id do it in tandem in my 6m Tornado. My brother and I regulary do the Mid Channel Rips for a spot of Summer Cod Drifting.

I`ll be very happy in the Humber and keep saving for the Scorpion.

See you all out there soon.
