Scorpion RR880 - anyone know it??

Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing this Scorpion RR880, she's running twin Penta D6 with Arneson surface drives. As an ex-powerboater, that's the main appeal!

I wondered if anyone might know the boat, or any of her history?

Apparently she was initially built as a superyacht tender, she seems very similar to 'Hot Lemon' but with a leisure configuration.

Many thanks,

James

Hi James.

From my memory., and I might be making it up or I could have been lied too. BUT I believe it was built by a wealthy owner when Scorpion was still owned by Graham Jelly. I remember it appearing in the Lymington yard and looking slightly different yet sexy.

I think the owners son used to work for Scorpion and they bought it partially built and completed it themselves to what looked like a high standard. I reckon it was about the time Graham was planning his exit from the business.

They also had an older derekane layup 8.1m hard nose called sharky which was an ex raceboat, refurbished that to quite a high standard and used another ex scorpion employee to build a one off console and rear seat for the 8.1 refurb including a Retube etc.

There's a guy called Pete ciaputa-Moore on FB who might be able to tell you more. He did the 8.1 refurb. Essentially it was a partial self build, but I think they used some of scorpions sub contractors such as fusion for stainless etc. I wouldn't be put off, but I would check it has a HIN number. Check if it has stainless or moulded tanks etc.

There are a few one offs and custom Scorpions out there. Mine included.

What speeds are they quoting. There is an upper limit on the hull without rear spray rails where the delta shape and the scorpion nod can slip into chine walk. Mid to late 80 mph according to the people that initially setup mine.

Morning all,

Thanks for your informative reaponses! I hadn’t checked in here for a few days, so apologies for my delay replying.

She does seem to have a HIN, it’s listed as being GBSCO10001K202
Is there anyone/anywhere that can give me any more information from that?

Strangely though, she doesn’t seem to be registered anywhere, or have a name as such?

She’s stated as reaching 65-75 knots top speed, which seems strangely broad? A 33ft RIB chine walking at 85mph could get interesting! I’m used to it with smaller race boats at least, and I doubt I’d often take her that high realistically.

Any other info very gratefully appreciated, thanks again for the help so far!

Cheers, James

Check what the fuel tank is made off.
Some were fibreglass, and their lifespan may be about up.

Hopefully with this one being diesel, that wouldn’t be such a concern, but I will check regardless! Thanks!

I'll check my HIN number format in a few days when home. I'd suggest she will still be a good boat. I always remember her looking good.

Maybe it's stainless tanks at that age but worth looking into. The previous owners of scorpion had both my boat HINs on record, if the files have been handed over that would be handy.

My current rib was one of the first stepped hulls and had no inner rails. The story is she chined like mad with twin 150s at c.85mph. The Previous owner fitted timber rails which still remain and she's rock solid at 71mph on single engine, unless the sea is completely flat then you sometimes need some steering input. For the average driver that might be unsettling but you have fast boat experience plus it's a BIGGER boat
