Scotland's west Coast Diesel Outlets

Just started preparing the rib for this years holidays and I need some help.

We will be away to Scotland on Sunday next stopping on Islay for the first night and then up to Oban or Tobermory for the second night, Portree on Sky for the third night and leverborough on Harris for the forth night. On the return we hope to stop on the west coast of Skye probably Talisker and then back to Lagavulin on Islay for a rest prior to the trip to Bangor for the rib raid.

Problem I have is diesel, I can fill up at Bangor NI but need some information on fuel on the water at the other locations on the west coast of Scotland, can anybody help ?? also for interest the present cost.

The reason for the stop at Leverborough is two fold, my other half’s brother lives there and also it is a good starting point for a trip out to St Kilda should the sea conditions allow.

Diesel at Oban and Tobermory, no problem. There's Kyle too. Portree, I've never bought at but there is a fuel depot at the bottom end of the pier. You'd need to enquire. Leverburgh, you'll need to get it off the fishermen or try Tarbert (east loch).

No idea about your return journey.

St Kilda is cool.

Thanks for the info

I can carry 300 Lts but with the trip to St Kilda I need to keep the tanks topped up. If I fill at Portree I can make it back if needed but I will try to return by a different route to make the most of the trip.

I am looking forward to the St Kilda trip, and being based in Leverborough we can make a early start and a late return giving us the maximum time ashore.

Puffin Divers have a Diesel pump on the jetty 2 miles South of Oban (Small yellow and black fishing smack on the quayside and probably 2 black and yellow 11m Redbay ribs on pontoon is a good turning mark for the jetty.

Benbecula, Uist and the other Island have lots of little harbours on their East Coasts with fishing boats (last there in 99). Cash and some jerry cans would be my approach. Couldn't find a good harbour on the West coasts and the islands linked by causeways, so you might get a rib through under the causeways but tide runs very quickly and looks scary at low water. Didn't see any obvious fueling jetties at either ferry terminal, may be arrangement with harbour master and local delivery ?

Dave,

Good luck with the trip. St.Kilda really is worth the effort.

Diesel straight in to the boat in Berneray in the Sound of Harris. Perfect for a top up before heading out in to the Atlantic.

Give me a ring if you need any more info.

Right, there is a petrol station in mallaig about 200yards away from the pier, might be a bit clumsy running around with jerrycans... but that's a last resort.

There is a Red diesel tank at the Salen Jetty (Loch sunart, turn RIGHT coming out of Tobermory.) But is probably the wrong way to.... You could try arisaig, there's arisaig marine there, im sure they must have a tank...

When you come up, tell me when and i'll come out and wave to you (Ardnamurchan.)

If you would like more info, ask me and i'll have a look.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Thought I'd update the diesel at Berneray bit. Checked it out in the summer.

There is diesel straight to a boat but it's not for public sale. The diesel tank is administered by the local council and the fishermen have accounts. The fuel is metered as it is pumped out. You need to find someone with an account and get them to sell you diesel for cash.

The first person I spoke to said he would be happy to do it, so that seems positive.
