The b@stard! He probably drives a flash motor too with small seats that his missus (and bit on the side) can still fit their arses into, while living in a house with a place round the back for the bins. More front than Brighton, I say.

But seriously lads - lotta hating there for the bigger £££ boat owner. Ultimately a lot of boats and cars are for Show - but some owners use the Go as well. I can see how a Sealegs would really suit someone in a very tidal environment, perhaps away from slips and marinas. Island to Mainland for example, or house on a remote beach (Bigmuz?). Yeah the price tag is mental, but that's life. Hate Ferarris because minted blokes own them? Nah!

Yeah I can admire the technical bits of the sealegs, and the guy near me with one does live remotely on a tidal area, it's not so much the craft I have an issue with it's the owners, the sort of people that don't respect the gear and know to use it within it's limits

I remember travelling in the UK in maybe 71/72. There were Ducks in use on mudflats, maybe relating to shellfish harvesting. I suspect in Morecambe bay as I had rellys in Barrow?

I'm primarily a hard boater with an ludicrously loud engine. I am universally hated.

(I have put a lot of effort into silencing it - nothing works)

Sadly, I promise this is louder. So I tend to carry a 5hp aux for manoeuvring in marinas.
Frankly it’s stupid. I specced and built the engine myself. I tried blaming the engine builder, but he’s deaf.

(Technical details - cam overlap to hit the required hp without a supercharger necessities a dry exhaust)

Yeah the exhaust is all above the water on my uncles boat too, it's shocking how much of a difference it makes

Quite different, that is a wet exhaust where water is injected into the exhaust tube through the risers which muffles the noise along the 18" or so of the exhaust tube somewhat. Unfortunately I can't do that, so the exhaust is dry to the tip - lot noisier. Hence a donkey motor for maneouvering in marinas.

I might dial back the camshaft specification eventually so I can run a water injected exhaust - which is very easy to then silence quite effectively

As a social pariah myself I don’t get why you can’t run a wet exhaust ? I get straight lips and minimal a pipe gives least back pressure or is it the can lrofiles require no back pressure?

Why no supercharger?

When I designed the engine, I wanted maximum efficiency. Equating to maximum mpg and maximum performance for a given capacity.
A benefit of this is is has a strong torque curve, but also hits hard in the hp stakes too.
The consequence, unfortunately, is that there’s a bit much overlap on the cam meaning it has too much reversion at idle to handle a wet exhaust.

The first version had water going in right at the tips, with some Gibson mufflers and rubber flaps. It was super quiet, but sucked back too much water. So now it runs full dry.

Why not supercharged? A supercharger consumes a massive amount of hp to run it, and I’m not really a fan of them TBH. Certainly a supercharger would have meant a milder cam, in turn allowing a wet exhaust. But I wanted a nice compact, old school “8 stack” setup.

Eventually I might look at a slightly milder cam spec to see if I can get a good compromise that will also allow a wet exhaust.

I think I know what your problem is Matt, you've left your Slazenger 'anyone for tennis' balls in the air intake manifold!

I bet that's a bit loud at both ends, quite a pretty beast though.

I can see the attraction to a sealegs, even if it is for a very niche market.

But ever the worrier... when it breaks... what do you do?

Noticed around 6 Sealegs RIBs around in the Camel last week. A couple were on drying moorings that we’re only accessible a couple of hours either side of HW. I can see the attraction in the practicality of them in this application. It makes your mooring useable 24/7. Saying that, we never actually saw any in use.
