While a useful suggestion my answer would be because that would be quite expensive, Is unnecessary, Is not making it yourself, would most likely be heavier and I am not working at the moment and enjoying some time off making things and preparing all my boats for the coming season.

This is something that will be used occasionally on a 15 hp 3.4 m rib in good conditions to go sedately up a river. It could withstand far more than that as it is incredibly strong

how have you test it? how do professional manufacturers test their installations? given the critique you've had of it (and that you obviously weren't confident enough in version 1 and added bracing).

I post in many forums and am quite saddened by how unpleasant several people are on this particular forum.

I must have missed anyone being unpleasant. Have you confused critical appraisal of your work and a genuine concern for the safety of your passenger for unpleasantness?
Nobody has reported any post to the moderators to deal with so it can't have been too bad!

It also amazes me how so many people seem to lack any ability to make something themselves or do their own servicing work but simply like to throw money at a situation in the hope it will be sorted for them.

How many people is that which amaze you?

...rarely has anyone adopted wood for being the lightest strong material... If I had time and space in your situation I'd be tempted to make a GRP box.

It could withstand far more than that as it is incredibly strong

I think you must have watched too much american politics, simply repeatedly restating a "fact" with confidence does not actually make it a fact. Perhaps if you had posted a picture of the new improved version people would have been more inclined to agree.

Now that you have revealed it's intended purpose - drifting along a river - I'm not so concerned. Any orange crate would suffice for that. I still maintain it's unsafe for use where waves or sudden turns would be encountered.

Actually, this forum is stuffed with REAL do-it-yourselfers, boat builders and many other assorted experts. The depth and breadth of experience and knowledge is incredible. They think your seat is unsafe. Politeness is a two-way street and you haven't been overly gracious yourself in receipt of well intended critique.

:-) you were proof that the loads even on a small boat were larger than might be expected, and vibration quickly undoes things that seem strong.

Fyi. The nuts holding it to the console were replaced with nylon and have remained tight since, and the light pole was fitted using brackets into the seat back which have lasted about 18 months but the self tappers have worked out...
