Send and outboard from Scillies
I have won an Ebay auction on 90HP outboard in Scillies.
Does anyone have experience of sorting the logistics of something this size from the Scillies?
I'm not sure the best way to proceed. Obviously aware of potential risk of scam from either party. I don't want to pay until I have the engine in front of me, doubt he'll want to commit to bringing it to mainland until I've paid..
What's the solution. Wait for calm weather and take the rib over and bring it back on a pallet strapped down on the deck?!

Find a member on here (or if you're on the diving forum too ask one of them) to go and see that it actually exists.
Jump on the ferry / plane or speak nicely to some one out there and have it pallet wrapped and sent home on the ferry, then pick up from Penzance.
There will be a company or two out there that will sort postage I'd have thought as there are commercial centres on the island.

It would take a pretty dopey scammer to use the Scillies as a location.
If it's collection only, the OP should've asked the relevant logistics questions before bidding.
I suggest that you cancel the sale and take the safer option of going to a recognised outboard retailer.
Online auctions are clearly a mystery to you and best avoided.

Yeah, it's a scam. The icecream van in the background isn't exactly selling Walls and I've never seen an icecream van on the Scillies.
A genuine seller may've happened to mention that the OB was located 22 miles offshore.
The scammer won't realise that he's nicked an account which gives a bunch of islands as his location.

I reckon you're 99% likely to be right in that its a scam, no seller rating, remote location, etc, but what's the worst that can happen.
I'm not daft enough to fork out any money until I have the engine securely in front of me and have checked it out.
Just curious about the actual logistics if it does indeed turn out to be real
Thanks for the warnings though!

I think that you need to make contact with your Nigerian Scillonian, arrange to view someone's US based Etec 90, have an icecream together and then line his pockets with wads of escrows. Wake up FFS! Scammers live off of muppets like you!

Evening Mister Mollers - I'm sure you're all frustrated and tetchy with concern for the OP (just as I am) but we must be niceish.

Diver 1 - surely you must have had some sort of plan before you bid on and won an outboard in the Scillies (maybe in the Scillies). The general opinion is that it's a scam? - OK but you're strangely still wondering how to proceed, if it's real.
Same thing either way, IMO:
Ask the seller for a phone number - call them to arrange collection.
They fail to provide same - forget it
or
They take a call - chat about the engine and weather and island life. Arrange to allow a local mechanic or island taxi swing by and eyeball the engine. Make the payment and same guy returns and puts the engine on the ferry for you. The Scillies must have a few folks who multitask for a few quid.
But apparently it's just a scam and you're just helping us fill in our evening?
