Solent container ship vs RIB

BBC News - Man in dinghy in near miss with Southampton-bound container ship
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-60638458

Not sure if you guys have seen this already. I presume he was in the exclusion area? He's definitely lucky to have escaped.

I think he was in Southampton Water adjacent the Fawley oil refinery and the ship was on the way out.

Clean underpants required all round and I suspect he set a new freestyle world record.

You need mates like that don't you?

Ones that are quite happy to motor away in their own SIB rather than rescue you.

The video has been linked on here already but I had wondered if I was the only person to think like Nasher... SIB 1 is still under power and when SIB 2 can't start the engine SIB 1 just motors away leaving the person in the water taking some 20sec before they decide going back might be a friendly thing to do.

Surely if the two sibs were together they knew well in advance they were in a collision situation & the running sib could have towed the disabled boat to safety. Its not like you suddenly think oh shit that huge great ship will be on me in two mins best start the engine. Its not like you couldnt see it. There must have been several minutes of 'ohh shit the engine wont start' at which point your buddy pulls you to safety leaving it till its that close seems suicidal

Maybe he just thought the container ship would stop.

Or he was looking at the Marine Traffic app on his phone and that said the ship wasn't due for another hour or so.

Shocking how the other boat didn't assist sooner.
