Solo fishing session

Today's plan had been to head offshore for a little freediving among the seals for a couple of lobsters. Unfortunately a cool current had pushed 15'c dirty brown water with barely 2m visibility along the coast, ontop of that a 5m great white had been seen hunting seals in my favorate location. Heading out solo I thought best not tempt fate and stay in the boat instead.

Over the radio there was talk of several boats hooked into both bluefin and yellowfin tuna out wider, also plenty of makos among them. I had only taken one light fishing outfit which was more suited to snapper fishing than the yellowtail kingfish that turned up. After catching a few I took the rib for a run down the coast where I was lucky enough to find a few humpbacks and a pretty big pod of dolphins.

All up a fun session, I really enjoy boating alone every now and then, not only for the peace but also the handling of the boat feels so responsive solo.

Amazing pictures jonp. We're just back from Peterhead harbour. A small cod and dab for our troubles. You'd probaby use 'em as bait!

One was eaten last night, the others were filleted, skinned and vacuum packed for the freezer. I tend to share much of my catch with a few old people who don't fish anymore. One of my girls competes in triathlons and eats incredible amounts of fish, she also catches plenty too, last week she caught a 71kg bluefin.

If their anything like my girls 71 kg would be well over their own body weight in fish!

If we get a glut of fish I’ll do potted mackerel, sealed with butter it lasts up to 5 days in a le parfait type jar in the fridge ready for toast

Tuna would be good for this also

Thanks for the link.

I've been meaning to try a tuna picking recipe and we do smoke some of our fish too.

Yes my daughter is pretty lightweight, no mater how much or what she eats, she can't get over 50kg, perhaps if she stayed still for a few minutes would help .

Wow! Even allowing for the wide angle shot, that’s a big fish. Kudos[emoji106]

Worth trying this with your mackerel too.It was a rather delicious staple of my youth.
I wonder what it'd be like with tuna?

I was experimenting in Normandy earlier this year with a surfeit of mackerel. I made a ceviche:- Filleted/skinned/deboned 4 mackerel fillets cut into chunks. Juice of half an orange, juice of a lime, finely chopped shallot, salt & pepper. Mix together & leave for 1/2 hour. Handful of chopped coriander, very nice.
