Speeding is expensive
Just read this today having been sent out on the web=
"The driver of a speeding rib has been prosecuted after being stopped by the Lymington harbourmaster.
He was seen driving at 'excessive speeds' in Short Reach on the Lymington River on 21 August last year. Watersking is banned on the river which also has a strict 6 knot speed limit. At the time he was stopped by Lymington Harbour master, he was said to be travelling around 15 - 20 knots and towing a wake boarder.
He was fined a total of £1690 at Southampton Magistrates Court on 8 February.
Lymington harbourmaster Ryan Willegers said, "In cases like this one it is appropriate for the magistrate to impose a penalty. I hope this will send out a warning to all those who would drive their craft in excess of the 6 knot speed limit."

That does seem OTT unless his actions were endangering someone else.
I always find it strange that hi speed is usually less disruptive than displacement speeds in a RIB yet some places insist that you travel slow creating a larger wake!

Ridiculous. I'm not condoning speeding if there's a rule in place... but nearly £1,700! The world has gone mad. You could rob a corner shop and get less. Surely there's a common-sence approach to this if the person is a first offender, wasn't aware of Jack Hawkins (aka Harbour Master's rules, etc.

Yeah, that's an unreasonable fine.
Sure he should not have been speeding, and have got some kind of fine or warning, but £1700 is just unfair.
but that's how the law works sometimes.

We see it every week in our local rag, Joe blogs fined £250 for being caught by local pcso throwing a cigarette on the floor in Town Centre then on the next line ..Joe scrote fined £300 for being caught while driving without insurance, of course it doesn't tell you how long he had been driving without it. Could have been years

There's a 6kt speed limit. He wasn't doing 10kts, he was doing 20kts, towing a wakeboard! He's probably a "f" you serial offender who ran out of luck. Catch yerselves on, yis sound like PETA and Amnesty International having a luv-in.

Not knowing the background, maybe he had been doing it for ages and warned about it loads of times?

Lymington HM don't prosecute people as a matter of course, he must have ignored a lot of warnings. Have a look on a chart and Google Earth and see where Short Reach is (there is a small picture in this article Lymington speeder fined | Motorboat news | MBM). It's a narrow area through moorings with lots of boats and a ferry berth and he was doing more than 3 times the limit. If he had done the equivalent on a a road he would've been looking at losing his licence and possibly a prison sentence.

The Press like to make a good story so tend to avoid certain facts. The extent of the fine suggests this wasn't Joe Bloggs being unlucky with an over zealous enforcer. It sounds more like someone who is a danger to themselves and others.

I don't know the time of day when this guy had his collar felt, but as a regular on that river I have only seen the small HM boats out during peak hours. So chances are it was during a busy period. On a Sunday, at peak hours in August that stretch of the river would be busy. Anyone wakeboarding there at that time of year must have a screw loose. I have always found the HM at Lymington to be quite human, unlike the little hitlers at the other end of the Solent The fine may be a little heavy, but IMHO he was asking to get hammered.

I expect they took the persons income into account and hence why fine was so high, they do it with car speeding. I got fined £500 for a car speeding offence and 6 points, the person in court before me was 16 years of age had crashed his car while speeding into another car had no insurance and no driving licence he was fined £100 and had to pay off over 3 years.
I expect they also thought that the publicity would stop other speeders on the water.

Then there is the type of idiot who not only flouts the 6.5 kt speed limit but films it and puts it on the internet.
and not only that, but the webpages linked to this video show his name (Lewis), his age (23), place of residence (Surrey) and occupation (estate agent). I hope Littlehampton Harbour Board can put 2 + 2 together...

I don't know, but do you think some folk get some form of pseudo satisfaction from "speeding" in restricted areas? Maybe getting a wee buzz between the loins?
lol
