Directions

For those of us coming across the Atlantic and have never been to Cardiff, can someone give us some directions please. Or do I flag down a cab and announce, 'Take me to The Spirit of Cardiff?'
ps. directions from the Cardiff train station.

Like the sound of a river cruise - would be nice to see the Millenium Stadium and all of the developmens around there if that is possible.

I plan to leave the harbour fairly early Saturday Morning to escort POB into Cardiff, so if the river trip could be planned to be after her arrival that would be great.

Great to see you hope to be there to escort POB in.

Jools

Can you keep us up to date with your time of departure Bristol, eta Cardiff etc

(guess it will make a change for you to be in a vessel that keeps you drier than us!)

Yep - I'll be down on the ship next Wed (I'm in London this week) and we will plan our departure times and ETA's then - it all revolves around the tides.

So update next week

Jools

ps - I've found a hotel in London with a water-taxi - much better than the tube - I'll post some pics at the weekend!

Stealth has asked for directions from the station

From http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap...arrow=N&zoom=3 the station is in the middle of the map and the SoC Visitor center is in the bottom right corner where it says museum - next to the basin with 4 in it!! I don't think this is too far to walk - can you confirm Nadia.

I'm sure we can arrange "RIB" transport from there to the Yacht club. I think there is also a ferry accross to Penath Marina

Sat Cruising............

I can try to coordinate something in the way of cruising on Sat, however I've never been to Cardiff before and don't know my way around the Bay! I suspect that a few boats will do as Graeme is planning and go out to meet POB in the morning and I'm sure we can organise something impromptu in the afternoon if the weathers good. (if not we'll be in the pub!).

Nadia there are other RIBS coming I think ... Alan Mck from Northern Ireland, Allen C from the IOM and Brian me and Laura either in Cyanide by sea or Yellow Tang by road! We'll be along on Friday all things permitting.

BTW we have booked accomodation at the Holiday Inn Express which looks to be not too much of a cab ride away from the festivities!

Cheers,
Alan:

SPOOOOOOOOOOOKY!

I've just read the SoC e-mail newsletter. Jan has had to drop out, however he has been replaced by a local film cameraman Alan Carter. This new crew member brings a strange coincidence.

Quote: Carter's skills as a TV cameraman will be put to good use in documenting the Spirit's historic voyage. And his addition to the crew results in one little oddity - all four crew members were born in 1953, the year of the Coronation and first ascent of Everest.

1953 eh! Guess what year I was born in? Yes 1953. And I am the one who started this thread as well. Spoooooky.

See y'all soon.

Cheers

Keith (born in a great year) Hart

Hey, at least we've proved we can live this long AND still do crazy things! Young whippersnappers. We'll see who's bright eyed and bushy tailed on Sunday morning to see SoC off.

Cheers

(You really get left behind if you have not logged on for 24 hrs!!!)

Accomodation news:
For anyone that still needs accomodation:
ie. not staying on the POB, sleeping in the pub, or checked into the Holiday Inn Express(Schooner Way):
Managed to secure a rate with the Hanover Int - 4*
Just up the road, literally, from the Holiday Inn Express,
£19.50 per person per night, based on two sharing. Thus £39.00 for a double. Otherwise £34.50 for a single, inc breakfast.
This rate would be available for Thursday, Friday and Sat night (the 28th, 29th and 30th)
You need to quote Spirit-of-Cardiff. The lady is called Liz Stead.
Her tel number is 02920475029.
I may get slapped wrists for telling you all this, but the crew and families are booked in here, and have taken a share of the allocation already:
We were given 15 rooms at the above rates, 7 are booked, thus there are still 8 available at this discount(duh!)
Here's your chance.
The hotel does have a gym (you ain't got time to go there though!) and a pool! Their moto is "we never say no." I do prefeer "Driven by the Challenge".
If all else fails, crash space at mine.
Jono, not sure what your options are, as you got Beau with you.
(did get your PM). I guess you could stay at mine, if the dog is not too wild(unfortunately, I am alergic to cats and dogs hairs - so I do have niggles too,) but we could make a bed in the kitchen)

Meeting the POB and River Cruise:
Jools, you will let us know your ETA's next week.
We have got the blessing of the SOC and crew at 12:00 on Sat, which would be good if we could all be there. I was thinking can we escort you in before that? and do the river trip like 2/3pmish?
I am happy to come along to that anyway, crew place needed perhaps, and play tourist guide.
Don't want to make too much of a timetable, but have a few things booked!

Directions to the Bay:If you want to walk, will take you about 30 minutes - a brisk one.
By main bus station or central train station.
Go to Wood Street - literally by the station. Ask for the number 8 bus marked Mermaid Quay / Cardiff Bay - a single costs you 60p (and have the correct change ) Get off by The Packet pub (ask the driver); and walk to Tube - about 7 minutes (+ via 3 pubs!!!)
Phone me! 07811553925
Alt get a taxi, should cost you about £3-4.00 to the Tube / or The Waterguard Pub!

I have not forgotten the requests for a summary of boats and people making the SOC send -off.

As Keith mentioned, if you all could display your SOC send off stickers on the dashboard, for those of you driving up, will be easier for the security guard on the road to the Yacht CLub.

Directions to CBYC: M4 Junction 33. / 9 miles south. Take exit marked Penarth / Barry. Take the left sliproad off, and head towards ASDA, at next roundabout turn right(unless you need supplies) and head towards the newish looking houses. you will see ALDI on your right (more supplies). At this roundabout, turn right again(unless you are coming to my house and I live down by the newish houses) and go under the dual carriageway you have just gone off. you will see signs marked to the International Sports Village. follow that road, you will pass the Red House Pub(my local) on the left side and get your first glimpses of the Bay. Go through the security gate, the guard will be briefed on your arrivals, and to look out for the RIBNET stickers, he will also have a list of people arriving with boats via trailer(reminds me - can those arriving by road, pass me their rego plates, or is that too complicated?) Follow road to end - you have arrived at the CBYC. Park car, launch boat, have fun.

Will post these directions out again with summary.

Last note of the night:
The first publication of the Buy a Mile honour roll is being published tomorrow, so all you nice people out there that have bought miles (up untill last night) will see their names in print.

Will get a few copies and give out at the SOC send off week-end!

BTW Jono, last note about bed in kitchen referred to a dogs bed, you two can have the spare room or sofas in living room of course! I hope that was not misunderstood!!

Jono,
I got your PM, but replied on the Forum!
Are you sure Beau is going to be okay in the car - ?
Not a problem at my house, honest.

Leave it up to you.
The Hanover is about 10 minutes by car from the Yacht Club.
This is about a half hour walk!

But the hotel is closer to the Bay and the pub we are going into on Sat night!!!

Re security at YC etc.
They have big gates they shut at night, plus the POB is going to be there with its full guest list on the Sat night - so I am sure they will keep an eye on things too. Plus there is a security guard at the end of the road, so not easy access to the general public.
If any robbers / tealeaves come by water- it will be a first in Cardiff! (touch wood)

What I would suggest, if all okay with everyone esp Jools, is that the POB will tie up alongside Pontoon, and ribs can reef up alongside and around.

Jools, want to meet up?
Just give me a call anytime - 07811553925.

Pretty quiet week-end.
well, not many appointments - but working on the SOC send off week-end summary (that may take awhile, making sure I got all the details together!)

Wil be in the Visitors centre from 10:30 - 13:00ish tomorrow, then free to do whatever.
Sunday free all day! (was going to mow the lawn, and trim the hedges - if it was sunny, then again, perhaps get the hammock out and read a mag!!! if it was a heatwave; but nothing major planned)

Either call on my mobile, or the centre on 02920450583

See you soon.
