I feel much happier with the little tohatsu 3.5 on the transom next to my 50 . I use it lots for fishing but its also handy for coming up a shallow river like looe when the tide is not quite up enough . Its also a short shaft , even though the main engine is a long the little one mounted at the side is plenty deep enough in the water .

we are quite often miles from shelter and although my fairly new tohatsu 50 has never done any worse than oil a plug i know any motor could let me down .

It would be a long slow trip home with the 3.5 if we had to but we could at least get to a shetered anchorage
Enough fuel is another issue , but it won't cure a dead engine
