Storage building dimensions for 6.5m RIB

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade our magnificent 4.8m Ribcraft to either a 5.85 or 6.4.

Unfortunately the garage is only just big enough for the 4.8 so am looking at putting up a building in the garden on a concrete pad.

Can anyone advise what height opening I would need for a 'standard' setup on a trailer.

Secondly, does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable building type. Wooden is least likely to offend the neighbours, but most off the peg wooden buildings, seem to be too low with a circa 2m opening.

Thanks in advance

Height very much depends on what A-frame arrangement you have. If you have a fixed a frame you're going to need quite a high door, at least 2.5m. my Humber Destroyer seats just (and I mean just!) Squeak under a standard 6'6" garage door on the trailer.
My advice would be go as big as your space / planning allows but assuming your in a residential area planning is likely to be your biggest hurdle - 2.4m height is a bit of a tipping point for domestic sheds / workshops - anything above that starts to get tricky. Suggest a chat or a pre-planning enquiry with your local council.
Here are some links for larger timber buildings

Thanks Jon,

Seems there is quite a lot of variability in A frame height.

Is a 'folding' A frame a common thing? I guess then the limiting factor is the screen height.

How handy are you? I've built many stables and small barn type buildings single handed in timber starting with 4"x4" posts at corners and as interims then filling in with a 4x2 framework, exterior T&G cladding then interior lining sheets. Roofing sheets to suit your location and their visibility to others.

They have been nice and weatherproof with great strength and as you say looking quite unobtrusive.

I'd be up for giving it a go....

I thought maybe a prefab job could be the way forward|?

Most prefabs will be designed to slip under the planning regs if you're UK based. It's something like 2.5m for a structure within 2m of the main curtilage.

Here you go. The building was originally built to take my 6.4RC which had an extended A-frame to mount the Radome. The current boat is a 545, so has more room. The width is the same. The drawbar on the 6.4 used to overhang the slab, the jockey wheel just fitted on the slab. The shed is 7m deep, front to back. The height required obviously depends on what A-frame you have & what’s fastened to it. The 545 is just 3m from floor to top of all round white. If required I can dismount the radar reflector & that would bring the height down to 2.4m. The 6.4 with the raised radome arch had around 150mm clearance.

The RC A-frame is a solid bit of kit, and higher than any console / screen Consider what you want in terms of radar / radar reflector, VHF antenna etc. These will add height. A folding antenna may be an option.

Mat be a silly question, but why do you need to house it in a building? Mine is perfectly fine under a good cover over the winter.

It's a couple of min to whip the cover off, and with hitch & wheel clamps and my car parked in front, I'm not too worried about security..I get the tinkering but a building is an expensive solution even if you have lots of land in the country.

We just built an agricultural building for the toys 24mx12m x4.6m eves & it was surprisingly cheap did all the labour & groundworks ourselves but total cost for steel frame 6" concrete floor box profile cladding & 5.5m high roller door came in just over 20k which is very cheap real estate. You can clad these buildings with whatever material you want depending on taste.
If you can build a decent size building I'd definitely talk to local farmers and see who does their sheds we found that buying from a kit build company who supplies everything as a kit added significantly to the overall cost. Theres a guy local to us does almost all the galvanised steel frames for all the local farms & it works out very cost effective. Once the frame is up which is just like big meccano the choice of sides & gables is up to you you can do wood cladding half brick/blockwork timber or whatever takes your fancy. It realy depends on whether you want to go the diy route or have it built. The built cost for ours was something in the region of 50 or 60k
