Storm Eunice

I hope everyone is staying safe.

It's 30 minutes until high tide and it's already 0.8m above the predicted level.

Not too bad here in Gloucester despite the dire "don't go out or you will die" warnings from BBC / Met Office as we were in a "red area".

Was watching the Brixham webcam, and I've seen far worse seas in Brixham harbour & Torbay.

Lost a few fence panels and posts, plus some smaller branches off our lovely old Maple.

I did make sure the boat cover was well strapped down Thursday afternoon, but will be dropping back round the yard tomorrow to check it's not shredded.

Hyperbolic over exaggeration scare tactics by the BBC!?.... surly not!?
Maybe they were just trying to re-balance the narrative after the Michael Fish episode some may remember
I know the News AND the Weather report is (these days)very often the vehicle for young and up-coming Producers ...with over egged light entertainment aspirations!
....I preferred the days of nameless 'winter gales' and sober weather warnings.
One might be forgiven for thinking there was some type of agenda
All good on the West Coast of Scotland!...gorgeous Sunny morning just now too

I went into Ashlett Creek on Thursday around 11.30 a.m. and the quay was well and truly flooded, two days before the highest springs. The quay was apparently built in 1887..... rising sea levels?

Spring Tides and High winds have always had that effect on parts of the Coastline....it happens.
Easdale Isalnd was swamped in 1881....(long before Al Gore)
...was been fine since

A WAFI mate of mine flew outta the SE on Thursday as the storm was gathering force. He flew to Holland and yesterday, in a gale, antifouled his (excuse me) yacht. He flew back today.

Pretty bad down here, no electricity, no WiFi or 4g, water now gone off a few hours ago, fences flattened and half the roof is on the front lawn.

Sorry to hear about your roof - there's no finessing that problem. But how are you "here" with "no electricity, no WiFi or 4g,"?

Sounds like you are a Man with a Plan!

Storms

I live out in the sticks. Back in the winter of '98 we had a mahoosive storm over the Christmas Holidays. It cleared roofs, flattened forests and took the electricity and water supply offline for over five days. Luckily, the background temperatures were friendly. I worked through it without the advantage of being prepared and afterwards it formed the basis for my domestic emergency strategy.

I don't have "big money" investment in self-sufficiency, but rather a more Gurnardesque philosophy of Prepare & Endure. Some provisions are maintained: food, water, batteries and fuel. My house can use solid fuel to provide some heat and hot water. I cook on gas and I have a decent 12v capacity to run basic 220v for IT and comms. I keep a little diesel for the vehicles as I discovered that in big outages, fuel stations close down. I strongly believe that we are becoming slaves to comfort and convenience, unable to countenance a few days of workarounds to continue with business as usual.

We can do better.

I wondered who’d be the first to spot that.

We got the leccy and 4g back a few hours ago, no water or WiFi still. Pretty blowy again today.

Just realised it looks a little ‘calm’ in that shot above. But that is this morning after the day before, courtesy of my local SUP shop:
