Strengthening the transom?

Hello all so yesterday i brought this engine and the guy had the boat just sat in the garden and he ended up selling me boat with the engine at first i thought it was matching (In new to all this) but clearly not the transom would snap if i full throttled it so im wanting to make it stronger but i can give it to the boat it can handle rough seas

The engine inside looks pretty much brand new never been used in salt water but could do with a water pump change anyone know where i can get a replacement?

Gosh that takes me back. As an early teen I was allowed to be "skipper" on a dory with this outboard. That must be from around the late 60s or early 70s?

Ill be truthfully honest i have no idea of what the boat even is and i hear that the engine is from the 70s i think.

Wow, that Crescent outboard is so old you can buy them at an auctioneers!

Spares are made by Volvo Penta. You’ll need to drop the outboard leg to see the state of the impeller. Looks like it’s a 12 vane variety from quick search.

Rough seas, not in that boat, it’ll swamp. There’s maybe some life in the engine, but to trust it ir will need a full service, pull start rope, sparks, fuel filter, etc. Get some video of it running and post it. Condition looks exceptional, and life in Spain has treated it well.

Agreed. It looks like the hull shape of a small sailing dinghy or rowing boat more suited to an outboard with 10% the power of that Crescent.

Yeah iv tried doing research on the engine and there's not much about it is there, but the engine we got it covered in maggots once i got it home checked if it had oil was very old but connected the fuel line and it fired up second pull and underneath the case its spotless i thought i was going to have a problem but once i see it i was a bit amazed for its age we have serviced as much as we could on the engine new spark plugs fresh oil but really think it could do with a water pump iv been on the boat and in rough seas its actually not so bad but its taking on water so suppose the paint and gel has cracks and its making the water seep threw but for the price i cant complain I'm going to have to try the 8hp tohatsu on it maybe the safer option but what do i put the 25 on now i have a 3.1m zodiac zoom inflatable sib

To the untrained eye this looks like a skipper 14 sailing dinghy which would be rated to a 4hp or there abouts.

No. The basic hull design is meant for the stability to come from the hull setting over with wind balancing your weight and the water pressure on centreboard and rudder. The hull shape is all wrong for being driven under power. It will never plane as such so a 2.5-4hp is the very most it needs and then to my mind rivers and smaller lakes is where it belongs.
