Thanks for the replies. Some damage was present before but only a small amount, nothing to indicate such a failure would occur.
I suppose this experience will concentrate the mind when inspecting this particular area of any RIBs I may have or use in the future.
Tube pressure was hard.
I have emailed a tube repairer to see what type of wait/ cost a repair will incur.
Understand what advantages a hard nose has now, hmm Osprey....?
(p.s hope the johnny ard crew have not read this thread)

Cut the T piece down to size and glue on to the flange above and below, i have just held this up to the flange on this rib to show what i mean, once you've done this you can replace the strips over the top, it's best to oversize them if ycan and use a heavier grade of fabric.

i did not realize damage like that could occur to a rib due to waves!? i was under the distinct impression that ribs were tough as nails and wave jumping and rough seas were manageable for them, apparently not so, perhaps ribs arent that tough? puts a whole new spin on things.

It sank.
However to be fair she had gone around the world first, and a few shorter trips around Europe. The end came when she dropped into a huge hole and destroyed the bow.

those videos are amazing, but i wonder how long they will last if used in that manner? i am still very surprised that a bow can tear off, ribs are so versatile, but perhaps not that tough (for standard models available to the public)? though a mate did just but an 5m ex-navy duck which he claims is bullet proof...

If you went out in a hardboat and did what tore the bow tube,you'd be calling for the lifeboat and your boat would be sunk.

Careful Nos, you're beginning to sound like a Rib Nobba.. all "gung-ho" and Bowie knife between the teeth. .... Surely you've seen hard boats stuff and recover...ask Matt... all he did was bite the dash..and carried on racing?
Also you're no doubt aware of the various cases of ribs having their tubes ripped off in a good stuff too.....I, of course, refuse to acknowledge any bow-rider style boat as a hard boat.. They are truly the Devil's Spawn...

The point I was trying to make though is that ribs are far tougher than Clipper is thinking. There's no such thing as foolproof though.

Well many Avons have been abused by the military for 20 years and are still going strong!!!

i hope so,
i guess when it is time to eventually upgrade i will really have to do my homework on which RIB is most suited to the abuse i intend on giving it, probably just start off with a couple of slaps when it mouths off and really give it a good beating if the diving is no good.
is a tear in the bow something that is considered common?

looks like you had some damage there before from hard impact, once it starts to tear it will go very easliy, take a look at the pic of my boat and that will stop you tearing it in the first place
