Poole is probably a good bet, stop in yarmouth or lymington, and then on to poole

I regularly go up to the Folly Inn - a steak and a bottle of rose seems to be perfect for a lads day out. The George at Yarmouth is also a good spot, but the Folly is cheaper and has lots of outdoor space.

My last lads day out ended in A&E. Wear your life jackets and kill cord.

8am start? You could go for Alderney or Cherbourg!

If not so adventurous, then a blast across to Poole and Old Harry Rocks is a good one, then take a trip round the back of the island calling in at Ventnor for lunch (Spyglass or the Mill Bay Inn - [my preference]!).

If the weather's a bit iffy then Yarmouth if it's easterlies, or Fishbourne if it's blowing a gale from the west (Royal Victoria Yacht Club or the Fishbourne Inn for lunch).

why don't you go all the way round the island, you'll be surprised how few people have done it, you can call in where you like then, good fish food in bembridge, cowes and yarmouth speak for themselves, ventnor has already been mentioned but watch for tide there, lymington, pompey, hamble, beauleau, i think you need a lads weekend

Boating is ok, but if the weather is crap, then this would be more fun... http://www.fyeo.co.uk/southampton.html

bottle of rose is perfect for a lads day out! An oxymoron to say the least. what "lads" are you drinking with? I'd get thrown overboard if I tried to order a bottle of rose in an all male environment!

Depends on the weather or rather what you want to put up with, what about blasting straight through past Hurst Castle and the Needles over to Jurasic coast Durdle Door then coem along the coast heading for Old Harry, pull in at Studland Bay and use one the Bankes Arms mnooring bouys to tie up on and pop up to that pub for lunch and a few beers then head back via bournmouth coastline. ?

Round the Island is always a good trip and one to tick off that you have done.
Other wise come down to the Juassic Coast, lots to do and see as has already been said.

Allegedly the one in Bournemouth is ok, rather than braving the wind and rain

I can see that didn't read well

The 'lads' I hang around with tend to be middle-aged city types, I still think of them as lads though.

Thanks all, some good suggestions there.

Can I ask, Bankes in Studland Bay, is there a sea taxi there, how would i get ashore with no tender? Also, do i need to worry about tides there?

Studland Bay ;- No water bus/shuttle, yes beware falling tide, if you get too close you will dry out and have a fair wait before being afloat again.

The sand slopes gently so could wade in, but tender is advisable. The banks is a good pub to eat/drink in, the beer garden has fab views of the bay.

The alternative would Swanage, you can use the pier (fee) or the small boat jetty (free) and use the numerous pubs there, or Poole Town Quay, again use the Marina (small fee) and plenty of pubs and resturants.
