You need to eat lots of haggis and wear a kilt otherwise they will assume you are an invader and attack!

You will get a "midge forecast" here: www.midgeforecast.co.uk

On still days near damp/wet areas you can expect to see midges between April and October (although I saw some last week!). But they are usually worst from June-August. The exact timing depends on the weather both at the time and over the winter period. As Jambo says they have been relatively OK for the last few years.

Not normally a problem well offshore and certainly not at proper rib speeds. More of an issue if you are camping on shore or wanting to eat/drink outside on a warm dry day in July. Skin-so-soft will stop them biting but not keep the buggers from swarming around you which is equally as frustrating.

I've never found anywhere on the mainland which was immune to them - but there are, I am told, a few islands where the ground doesn't hold water and there is so often a breeze that they don't get the problems.

I also have Kilda on my bucket list -so would certainly express an interest in such a trip .

For me it would involve a 400 nm + round trip but given favourable conditions - like your RC my RB would also make short work of it.
