Tachometer

I am interested in a tachometer for my Mariner 40hp 2 stroke (year 2005)

how would I know if it works with my outboard?

Mercury/Mariner 40 HP (3 Cyl.)
Wide Open Throttle RPM: 5000-5500
Recommended Transom Heights : 15”, 20”
Right Hand Rotation Standard
Gear Reduction : 1.83:1

That can be set to fit virtually any engine. If nobody else has told you I will look up which setting suits your engine for you tonight.

Some of the smaller Mercs/Mariners differ, some 8 pole, some 12 pole

the ones in the screenshot are 2 cylinder, mine is a 3 cylinder.

According to my list 40HP after serial number # 582399 will be 12 pole which I assume yours is.

Sorry, serial no's with a letter at the start are higher than those with a number (they must have run out!) so you are definitely newer than 582399 so should be 12 pole. It should be obvious if the revs are stupidly out anyway.
