Much appreciated Kim, Daniel, Tim...
Here are a few more pieces of the jigsaw before we head out to the Island of Wighty for the day...
1) Paul Ferry (superhero of Ferryman RIBs , Derry) unsticks the gearbox...& Paul (superhero hubby). The rope floated free of the prop just before the lifeboat arrived but we couldn't get the engine going again...I'd whacked it into neutral the minute the engine sounded funny; when Fi went for the prop I turned the engine off...after the rope freed we jiggled the lever before getting going again...but zilch...no kick at all...we may have jiggled the lever into gear but there it stayed. Paul showed us how to fix things should that happen again. (I tried to look intelligent at this stage )
2) The toobs don't look too happy after a few nights' pounding...mind you they've got to be the strongest tubes I've ever seen...they got the gaffer tape treatment (at least till home) as well
3) A local family invited us to their house for breakfast...then their friends arrived FOR LUNCH IN A HELICOPTER

Great Pictures

Thanks for posting the pictures Kathleen. I've talked to Fiona all through the week (it's starting to sink in for her what both of you did) and the pictures really bring the whole adventure to life

Cheers Malcolm. I'll shut up soon. After I've stuck up the last few little souvenir pics...and bits of the tale.

As much as a very small group of narrow minded, jealous people have been trying to knock these two girls achivments, it goes without question that the responce on this excellent site that they where truely succesfull. To recieve over 4000 views in one week is a true testimony to the support and interest the project recieved.

The full details ofthe charity can be found on www.the-ia.org.uk and should you wish to support the girls charity you can either PM me or Kathleen on how to make a donation.
On behalf of the girls, thanks for all your support and no matter what happens we will be ALL in Ireland this weekend to start our Trans Atlantic trip on Sunday.Alan P

The longest way round is the shortest way home...

Part V : Remember Fi? Don't Lose The Magic!

We were never alone really…from the tricks your eyes play in the dusk
turning clouds and waves into strange shapes to the texts received frequently asking for updates . Alan monitored progress from Portsmouth and his encouragement and Paul’s belief in us always motivated us on the boat. Other texts came in too with supportive words and jokes…thank you! (You know who you are!xxx) The fabulous man on duty as ‘Malin Head Coastguard’ who organised our Rescue had us in stitches as he called us ‘Charley Sailor’…then ‘Jolly Farmer’ on the radio! We’ll be eternally grateful for your calm presence sir.
(BTW thanks to my work colleagues who have mastered the delicate Irish technique of giving recognition while simultaneously taking the you-know-what…by christening me ‘Captain Pugwash’ immediately on my return We were kept in our place too by the cheerful gentleman in Donaghadee who listened intently to our tale and retorted ‘Shure ye’d have gone round quicker in a yacht’ )

Ireland is peopled with memories…the South for me; the North for Fiona. So the place- names brought back so many memories of people and events... RIBnetters were there too!!! Rogue Wave’s adventures in Courtmacsherry, the Cork group around Crosshaven, Brian Elliot’s eloquent account of his recent trip, J and SW in Scotland, the NI group, the Dublin lot, the patron saint of radios St. Jon Brooks, the NWR and Cookee working in the Isle of Man. (If we’d only had a clear day… )

And there was a lot of time to talk about ….well just about everything. And people! The boat was full of people we loved.
A few small-minded people we threw off the boat at regular intervals as they put in an appearance in the conversation!!! Some we made walk the plank because of their general meanness of spirit
The stars won out…especially Liz and Alan for entrusting their boat to us, an amazing hubbyxxx, the fantastic people we met in Donaghadee and the brilliant people of a little town called Fahan in Co. Donegal.

The most difficult time was not the rope incident; we were angry and disappointed we couldn’t get out of that one under our own steam. The really bad night was the long passage from Clare round Donegal and through Tory. We were frightened, simple as that. But the biggest battle wasn’t with the boat (she’s a beauty) or with the sea (she was a you-know-what ) but with our own emotions and thinking. That was the real challenge … and nothing I’ve learned in my training courses could have prepared me for that experience. Fiona if Alan thinks we had guts they certainly got a good workout that night

But it all started and ends with people.

And guts.

Have a look at the charity website if you get the chance and if you think it’s worthwhile please send a pm as Alan said and we’ll make sure any contribution goes directly to them. They’re working for the genuinely brave adults and children who are faced with a big change in their lives and lifestyles. May I say a humble congratulations to the people of real courage. The hope is by doing the trip and publicising it there can be assistance for you to get the resources and support you need. Hats off to people who face life’s journey every day with quiet and unsung bravery.

Never mind gallivanting around Ireland on a Jolly.

Shure anyone can do that

Missus

In the true Spirit of Adventure

Hi Kathleen,

Words cannot really express my admiration of your achievement. Although I have not been very active on Ribnet in recent weeks, I have followed your every step of the trip, thanks Alan.

It is trully a testament to your courage, abillity and faith both in yourself and Spirit.

I spent most the night awake thinking about the tow back into harbour. I am glad that no one had to enter the water to free the nets.

I cannot wait to meet Fiona and congratulate her.

I am now praying for the weather gods to play ball.

See you very soon.

Cool Kev. Warm hearted as usual

As it happens Fi had a bloomin good try to free the rope...if you read back you will realise it got a little complicated after that. Which is why you might have to full-service that engine
You will really love Fiona. Spoke to her tonight on the phone and while she has decided to come over a bit later to Portsmouth because of getting the boat ready this week, we will all meet up this week-end. She's going to post later.
Paul's just digging out my 'expert' (not!) video footage, and with some advice by Jon Fuller and perhaps a little web space from John Kennett we might be able to share that as well...so you can do a virtual tour with two madwimmin.

I've also just spoken to a very nice gentleman, Jimmy McIlwaine of the Ileostomy Association of Northern Ireland. He is delighted with the news of offers of donations (which have come in already...many thanks) but most of all says it really helps to raise awareness for such a (comparatively) small charity.

His direct details are as follows :

Jimmy McIlwaine
Hon. Secretary
Ileostomy Association
James Mount
Bangor
Northern Ireland BT20 4NR

Freephone No : 0800 018 4724

If you send him anything directly please say you are from 'RIBnet' so he knows. Same goes for the UK site which is closely linked (and coincidentally has close links with Portsmouth )
Spoke to Alan also and we would really appreciate a pm if you do this (just for records). We are also happy to send cheques for you so please feel free to pm any of us for our addresses.

Hi this is Fiona.
At last! In case you thought I was a figment of Kathleen's imagination (as good as it is) I'm real.
I would like to take this brief opportunity to thank you all for all your wonderful comments and support and for taking the time to think of us.
I will be ready and able to post more of the story and also more information about the charity in due course.
I will be over soon. Looking forward to meeting whoever I meet.
Take care

Fiona

1) Arranging the flags...that substantial tricolour was the only one I could find (a gift from Richard & Louise) and caused significant torque ...not to mention the boat listing to port
2) Titanic Moment...we was only messin Alan sorry...
3) Chats... r-l Liz (Fiona's brill Scots mum), Paulie, and sorry I've forgotten but maybe you're the guy that owned the Ferryman RIB that escorted us out of Lough Swilly???

Thanks for pms once again. Money has started to go towards the Charity.

People have also been sharing personal stories of how their lives have been affected by colon malfunction.

Very encouraging to know that some are RIBsters and continue to enjoy this sport.

Great stories of HOPE ...and the Charity above all appreciates awareness-raising.

Dear Missus & Fiona, apologies for being a latecomer on this one.
Heartfelt congratulations to you both. I always knew Missus was mad, this just proves it.

My story Part 1.

Hi it's Fiona.
When I was a little girl I used to climb trees. I knew that to get to the top was to achieve ultimate calm where there was no-one else. I tried to reach the furthest leaf and wondered had anyone touched it before. I also used to go out on a boat with my uncle. We'd go storming out of Ballydorn. I'd be sitting at the bow, wind in my face, freezing cold and singing at the top of my voice. It used to bring tears to my eyes.
Not sadness. Sheer joy and inner peace. With this trip I may not have touched water that nobody else has but I did get a chance to achieve a dream.
I'm not finished with dreaming. Because on the trip round Ireland I found a place in my heart that even I hadn't been to yet. However some things have guided me through my life in general and helped me in many different circumstances. I never dared to dream that I would get the chance to need them as much as I did round Ireland.
Even when I was most frightened it was OK because I felt after a lifetime of searching I was where I truly belonged at last.

Fiona

Hey Fi,

I was telling some kiddies in Portsmouth the story and I tried to draw the Jolly Sailor on the Board.
'Is that a sausage roll?' asked one of them helpfully...
'No. It's a boat.' I said...it wasn't that bad a drawing...I'm sure ()

Then I drew Ireland (that took a while )...
'What's that?' came another voice politely.
'That's Ireland' I said. (These kiddies are around 8 yrs old )
'Where's that?' the little girl asked.
'It's near England' I said.
'Oh England...' came the reply 'I been there once'

The story took a while after that. Just as well we're in the GPS generation !
But when I mentioned Fiona a few of them said : 'Is that Princess Fiona?' (They were all Shrek-heads)

'Yes', I said. 'But it's another Princess Fiona. Princess Fiona the Sailor. Now listen to the story...'
