The autopilot might be on, but the kill cord certainly isn't

Wandering around the boat at high speed with nobody at the helm, what a complete idiot. That's a big old RIB and would do some serious damage to what/who it will inevitably crash into whilst this muppet is swimming back to shore.

Unbelievable.

A little over 1000 horses, just needs to hit a rogue wave and as we say in Scotland - 'it's tatties ower the side.'

It's a rental company in Kos. I have booked a slightly smaller RIB for bareboat charter from them in October. Think I'll have a really good look around the boat and safety kit before taking it out...

Has Manos moved from Santorini to Kos?
(A very old joke - I doubt many remember him?)

I was pleasantly surprised last weekend that my mate, who is an excellent sailor, but has never had a rib before, did have his kill switch correctly attached on his first go in it.

When he was thinking about buying it, I drummed in the whole kill cord thing to him - it was nice to see the message had got through.

There is no excuse for not using a kill cord if one is fitted, I'm sure we all agree.

Going off topic a little - has anyone got experience of any of those remote kill cords - that are attached to you, but operate wirelessly? Coastkey, Autotether, that kind of thing.

Friend of mine has just fitted one to his 6m RIB as he often goes out on it alone and goes down the stern of the rib to pick up lobster pots. I have been out with him and he wears the remote on his wrist, he always tests it by dunking it in the water before going out. You can set the delay of time till it kills the engine and will send an SOS to a relative's phone if you go overboard and don't reset in a certain time. Will ask him what make it is and post back.

They do look interesting, especially as I have no mates, so moving round the boat as I leave/approach a pontoon, if the motor's running, even in neutral, I do want the killcord operational really.

The Milly incident has become a reference case for many training schools, I think.

Out watching the Fastnet race a couple of weekends ago, blowing force 7/8 down the Solent against the tide, conditions were interesting lol, went past a chap in another RIB - wearing full waterproofs but no life jacket and no kill cord, makes you wonder…….
