Griff wrote a book in 2002 about a trip he made to St. Petersburg through the Baltic on Undina.
Its called "To the Baltic with Bob".
Just finished it and its a really good read. Very funny.

I got that for Christmas, and just finished, amusing rather than funny - and certainly not 3 jokes/page as stated on the cover - interesting, and does show that Griff knows what he's doing on a yacht.

Price of the boat
Earlier on in the programme, Mike Wedge the Ancaster Rep showed them a £140,000 Beneteau and when they got the quote the boys said that its twice the price of the Beneteau. So the boat's likely value is around £280,000. Griff said that he had spent over £150,000 doing her up which might explain where the £500,000 came from.
Good series but could have been better if his crew were funnier people.

I was thinking it looked a bit like her, but couldnt see closely enough. There were certanily some ribs from here in the shots from the IOW festival bit as well.

It was a waste of time trying to follow it as a race as it was so poorly edited. Browndown was the "second" mark. You know they were novice crew because despite your assertion that they did well to get the kite set, it took them an age, even allowing for the editing they were still 20+ boat lengths from the mark before it was up and set. They also took an age to get the cruising chute up and that could have gone up on a spare halyard (bit of an assumption that there was one, but as it got hoisted eventually I would assume that they did!).
As for the start, all he had to do was duck down below the line, there was nothing in the way!
He was a very shouty skipper and whilst that works for some it is generally a sign that there is a nervousness/lack of experience and this he freely admitted. I thought he did well to admit to his shortcomings rather than bigging himself up as many may have done.
As for the valuation of the boat discussed earlier in the thread, I suggest that any doubters as to the real value of the boat just do a trawl around the web for a classic wooden 49' sloop in that condition, you'll find that he wasn't far out with his suggestion at the end!

There will be a Tamar (Salcombe's soon-to-be new boat) at the London Excel boat show - I believe it is going to be afloat and open for visitors to see around the wheelhouse, and possibly down below in the survivor space
If you think the Severn wheelhouse is impressive, you'll love the Tamar

I didn't see the prog.,but it sounds an identical format to those three plonkers on Westcountry TV that did a similar thing. Chris Denhem (producer of Rick Stein's progs) was the sailor, Ron Bendell appeared to be pissed all the time and Craig Rich was the weather/nav man. I think they went from Poole to Falmouth or there abouts.

I worked on a promo for one of the "up thier own arse chefs" to go around the coast in a classic yacht (we supplied the yacht, camera boat and logistics) cooking local produce - never came to anything though!

I watched this at xmas, i figured it was really good on the basis that it was a real program about something real, not all this x factors boll***cks we usually get.
One thing i did notice (being a boater), is i was over critical of certain items
e.g
1) how did he/they ground the boat with the plotter and depth equipment
2) VHF method
3) life jackets whilst on the tender
4) racing and not knowing where they were going
i hope they do more. 3 men on codders rib for example

Yes I am quite sure the maiden voyage from Guernsey would have been interesting for a start - especially the recovery when my mate's father decided to get out of the Discovery without putting the handbrake on........
His latest stunt is filling up his diesel Mundano with petrol(I haven't honestly he said) and then asking me to tow him using a cheap and nasty bar - to make matters worse he had lost the steel pins and replaced them with bent woodscrews - guess what - they sheared off after 25 yds!!! GRRR!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes I forget that I have been around boats since I was 2 - I asked another mate of mine to pass me the boat hook as we were approaching the pontoon and he passed me the anchor.............

You are having a laugh aren't you? I reckon half of every fleet I've ever raced in hasn't got a clue where it's going and just relies on following the leader! Especially in the Solent where the legs are relatively short and you are unlikely to have a "proper" navigator! Most people will use a co-opted member of the crew to simply monitor the VHF (chance of first error!), write it down (2nd chance for error!), try to get it in the plotter IF there is one and if they have time (3rd and biggest chance for error), then halfway up the first beat remember that they have left the piece of paper in their damp pocket/under a sailbag below/in the heads and then try and remember the mark and the rounding off the top of their heads (4th chance!), repeat this for approximately two hours and you've got a typical race boat!
