To fish or not to fish on a rib?
I have some friends coming down who are keen to go out fishing but I am not so keen on having hooks anywhere near the boat and tubes - what are your thoughts and what does anyone else do?

Been fishing off ribs for 30 years, never had a problem. Had to take the missus to hospital with a hook in her thumb though😳

Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish!
You don't even need a landing net most of the time as you just lean over and pluck the bigger ones out with you hand

I fish with a hand line and often have 4 mackerel and a large Pollock fighting on the line. I just lean on the A Frame and pull them in.

We have repaired a lot of ribs and sibs, can't ever remember fixing one that had been damaged by a hook.
Have fixed a Sib with severe rat damage after owner rolled it up and put it away for winter with bait still in it.

Cheers for the responses - part answered in the thread and not fishing for anything more than a bit of free lunch - hand line or rod?

As others have said..the hooks are not the problem..but if you are a bit boat proud ..the blood n guts will be your biggest problem.. especially if your friends try to dispatch them by whacking the fish head off your consul or A frame.
Best be prepared and have a big bucket to land the fish into as soon as its hauled on board.. I then find it best dispatching them by snipping their heads off with a big pair of shears. Not so messy that way .
Hand line or rod is up to yourself..I prefer a rod though

I use rods. A bucket & soft scrubbing brush is handy. Wash off the blood & sh1t as soon as poss, don't let it dry😁 If you are Mackie bashing, gut them as soon as you can & hang them over the side in a net bag, this gets rid of any worms & imho enhances the flavour. Don't wash off the sea water before bbqing or grilling. I like mackerel sushi / carpaccio. Thinly slice fresh mackerel fillets & dress with good olive oil & your choice of acid- lemon-lime- balsamic- farmhouse cider vinegar😋

Mackerel with a spicy gooseberry sauce is good.
Mackerel ceviche marinaded in bilge water and 2 stroke oil is not.
Always rods, but not too long - 7-8ft ideal we find. Landing net for thornback rays and big eels.
Builders tub partly filled with fresh seawater for dead fish to go into.
Wash away blood ASAP
Use scissors rather than knives for bait prep where possible.

The Kenzaki's might be a bit overkill. If the op only wants to do a bit of Macky bashing, then a cheap fladden rod would probably do.

I agree to a point, I've bust more cheap rods than I care to mention. They have a hard life on ribs. I've had a Kenzaki for a couple of years & it's still like new, I've just bought another (for the missus😄 . If it's a spot of occasional macky bashing, then I agree, a cheap fladden will do.
