Just got home after a 12hr drive from northern Skye. We didn't set out this week specifically to get to St Kilda, but weather permitting, it was always in the back of our minds. So last weekend, 6 of us set out headed for Loch Greshornish on the northern end of Skye. We had booked onto the Skye Caravan & Camping club site at Flashader, this is a well set out site with excellent facilities, but sadly no launching. Sunday saw calm weather & crystal skies, the forecast was similar for Monday with the wind picking up Monday evening & 5-6 blowing from Tuesday onwards. We decided to go for it, despite the quick turnaround after the drive up. We walked around to the fish farm on the opposite side of the loch to suss the slip for an early Monday AM launch. There are 2 slips, one onto soft sand & the other is just about all states, but covered in thick weed which made for a very slippy slip. There is also a small rickety pontoon that is shared between the fish farm & the Greshornish House Hotel (£16.50 for 2 bottles of beer & 4 warm cans of coke😳 but he did let us use his slip, so not all bad)
The boats were packed & left outside the campsite gates ready for an early start on Monday, the campsite is locked from 2300-0700. Monday morning saw more clear blue skies & a gentle 2-3 cold northerly. We decided to go for the "slippy slip" option as we were on low water & I didn't fancy tackling the soft sand. We deployed the "2 Disco" launching method which involved err, 2 Discoverys & a length of borrowed rope, by 0700 both boats were in the water & ready to go.

Dave, I think lots of people have problems playing the embedded videos, especially on mobile devices. it seems to be to do with which codecs are supported on the device, for maximum coverage I suggest uploading the videos to YouTube or vimeo, as they take care of the techie hassle.

Anyway, now we were on the water & on our way to Lochmaddy on North Uist, this involved a quick jaunt across "The Minch" a 17nm stretch of open water between in Inner & Outer Hebrides. The Minch can be a fickle stretch of water, due to the confused seas created by the currents & winds flowing between the islands, today however, she was on her best behaviour. We ran out of Loch Greshornish past the Ascrib Islands & the 9 miles or so up to Waternish Point. We rounded the point, through an area of confused overfalls & The Minch lay before us with the Outer Hebrides brooding in the distance.
An hour later we were pulling into the shelter of Loch Maddy on the look out for the newly placed pontoons. These are located right by the ferry pier & offer good shelter in all weathers. There is a brand new Portakabin toilet & shower block at the end of the pontoon. We tied up & went in search of breakfast, the Lochmaddy hotel is a 5 minute walk away & serves breakfast 9-10, however service is "relaxed" so be prepared to wait. We were the only ones in & it took 45 minutes to arrive, worth the wait though after the early start.
After our leisurely breakfast we pitched our tents on a small spit of land opposite the ferry terminal, oft used by wild campers. We returned to the boats & headed north out of Lochmaddy towards the sound of Harris. I had already plotted a course through the sound, we avoided the southerly Cope passage, opting for the northerly route almond the southern edge of Harris. The sound is a beautiful stretch of water well worth some time spent exploring, but today we were on a mission....
