Interesting point - did Portland Coastguard give you permission to speed in the harbour? Also did they know you were in a harbour at the time?

And another - If I'm in a small boat in a harbour why should I be expected to listen to channel 16?

Lastly I was on my wife's yacht at the weekend in Salcombe tied up to Normandy pontoon when some dick came past in a yacht club rescue boat with no life jacket on and at excessive speed - I politely (really) asked him to slow down and he yelled back "I'm a rescue boat and I know what I'm doing", I then politely asked him if he was rescuing anybody, at which point he hurumphed and went to pick up another 4 passengers (they had lifejackets) and disappeared back round to the yacht club, when I passed them going out to sea they were just watching the race! How they expected to rescue anyone in a 5 metre Rib with that many passengers is beyond me!

Because its good practice? You'll obviously be monitoring the harbour/port channel as well if you have a VHF?

All good points

They knew I was in the harbour & heading out as I had told them, but they dont have any authority over Christchurch harbour - so who knows !

Have to say its got to be good practice to have Ch16 on all the time ?

My thinking for responding was that I was 2 up in a boat that can ( according to the plate) take 7 ( and probably a few more if needed in an emergency) , then for an 18ft 'speedboat' I may have been giving worthwhile assistance. Well the CG seemed to think so - I told them I was only in a 4m RIB, but at the time all they knew was it was an 18ft boat in trouble.

BUT - the 20ft + boat that were closer didn't respond to the CG call for assistance !

Any size boat is better than nothing given that you didn't know what the problem was. Even if it was a bigger boat with more people I'd rather hold onto the side of a 4m RIB and be in the water rather than just bobbing around in open water.

Anyway everyone knows RIBs have a smaller wake at speed....

So they didn't ask to to speed in the harbour and didn't give you permission?

I may be wrong (it does happen!) but I don't believe that answering a CG call gives you the right to go as fast as you like in a harbour?

Before making this a regular occurrence you may want to ask the Harbour Master what his opinion is and if he would look kindly on you and not give you a ticket for speeding.

Why would you NOT have your VHF scanning 16 and the local CG working channel?

Mine gets switched on as she rolls off the trailer and switched off when she runs back onto it...

I agree , but as Christchuch has no harbour master I am not sure who to ask !

Dont worry I am one of few boats that does as routine stick to the 4knt limit. It is in my experiance the one or two jetskis & the yachts that blow the limit away !

A question, do the RNLI observe speed limits when on a "shout"? I appreciate they're different, but not to the gadge in the water...

If the Salcombe Lifeboat were to disappear up the Estuary at full speed on a shout it would make Salcombe a surf destination only second to Newquay!

Thats what was odd - I responded first , then they tasked the 2 ILBs - I could see one just ahead of me , but when I asked if they still 'wanted me' they said yes please !

When I spoke to the CG crew who turned up later they said as they were not sure what exaclty was happening they wanted as many boats as possible on the way !

My last comment - I dont think the 'casualty' had a VHF & the wake from my little 4 m is bugger all , infact far less that at 4-5 knts at anything over 15knts anyway.

I'm pretty sure even the RNLI have to ask permission to go above the designated knottage.
