Tragedy at Padstow - 5 May 2013
Details of this heartbreaking incident will emerge in the media soon. I was on a marine patrol this afternoon on the South Coast when I heard the incident in Padstow unfold on the radio. It was distressing enough to listen to and my heart goes out to those directly involved and those from the RNLI, Ambulance crews, SAR Helicopter crews, Harbour Authority staff and my colleagues who had to deal with the incident not to mention any who may have had to witness it unfold. Bank Holidays in Padstow are always busy.
In the meantime if you are going out this Bank Holiday or anytime for that matter PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WEAR YOUR KILLCORD.

A MAJOR rescue operation is under way off the coast of Padstow after a number of people are believed to have been mown down by an out of control speed boat.
Six people are thought to have been thrown from the speed boat, which was in the water near Padstow harbour.
The out of control craft is then believed to have mown some of them down. Emergency services are bracing themselves to treat people for serious injuries following the incident, which happened at around 4.10pm.
"It looks like the speed boat was out of control for a short time and it is believed some people may have been run over,

Seconded.
Sad and shocked for the innocents onboard.
Incredibly angry at the F**KWIT at the helm who's just killed 2 people because 'it'll be ok, we're not going far' or somesuch lame excuse.

I wonder if this was on the Doombar waves? I'm a regular windsurfer there & you can get some big big swells & breakers at certain tides. Its not a place for the inexperienced.

STATEMENT: PADSTOW SPEEDBOAT INCIDENT
Falmouth Coastguard was first contacted at 15.48 this afternoon reporting that six people had been thrown from a speedboat approximately 1/2 mile off Padstow in the Camel Estuary. It was reported by members of the public that the boat was out of control and had struck a number of those in the water.
The RNLI lifeboats from Rock and Padstow along with the search and rescue helicopters from RNAS Culdrose and RMB Chivenor were sent to the scene. St. Merryn, Newquay and Polzeath Coastguard Rescue Teams have also been involved.
We do not believe at this time any other vessels, kayaks or people were involved in this incident, other than those that had fallen from the speedboat.

Outgoing tide & force3 NW ish = Doombar epic wave conditions & potentially very dangerous boating conditions, the swell can catch you out, as one second there is none next an 8ft breaker is on top of you.

Very sad indeed, and probably a catalyst for regulation.... Such a shame and unnecessary waste of life, along with eventual reason to licence people even tho accidents will still happen.
Seeing the amount of ribs in the Solent today, especially with children, adults of which less than 50 % were wearing L J's - the water is still freezing cold and you won't last long in it especially if you can't float!
