Flip up steps not as hard to use as you think
Flip up steps are not as hard to use as you might think. As long as you can get hold of the bottom of your ‘A’ frame from the water, then you get one foot on the lower step and you’re on your way up. It saves an awful lot of drag and spray that you’ll get from a fitted ladder.

Just another alternative to add to the mix 316 stainless unlike the Armstrong ladder
Batsystem 500 rib ladder- folds away when not in use very stable in and out with no swing under and no permanent attachments on the tubes and wider than the standard transom ladder as well as being much deeper in the water
Bit more pricy mind but suited my needs and easy to deploy

Looks a great piece of kit - how is it anchored at the top?

This is very similar - & more of a Yorky price lol . I bought this to replace my shorter Defender/St Croix steps last year (could no longer get me leg up high enough to reach the bottom step easily ;-) )- good access with 4 steps and folds away easily. Osculati are a pretty decent marine brand. Bought a few of their products over the year - horns, fuel filler caps etc

I know it isn’t a cheap option but for my needs I didnt fancy a transom ladder as wanted something more substantial without the need for extra scaffolding on the a frame itself
Stows away in the anchor locker when not in use and no problems so far

In the last pic with it up you may have issues with it limiting the movement of the engine. I have a good 8" clearance between ladder & engine with engine on full lock. It sticks out about 11" in this position.
The bungee is to hold the support/stand-off legs up - you could probably achieve the same by nipping up their bolts a bit more.
I normally run with it folded in half as in pic 2. Bottom is just above the bottom of the hull. Folded in half highest (top of its bracket bolted to transom) to lowest point is 12".
(the white bit you can see on the anti-foul is where the fishfinder transponder fits. I take it off & use it on Rutland & Pitsford hire boats during the autumn/winter)

Thank you.
Really helpful.

I found that the ss flip up steps are OK for emergency use, but not great if you need to exit the water via the transom on a regular basis. They are a standard fit on Ballistics and I replaced with a traditional ladder because I expected it to get lots of use.
If transom space is limited, has the OP considered the type attached to the tubes?

thank you

My solution was a cheap used Stainless fold up jobbie from Ebay.
I cut a lump out of the middle of each step and welded it back together again.

Nice one. I've been thinking of doing something similar. But to reduce the folded length. I would need to take it somewhere as I can't do it myself.
