Transom tube/bung wanted
Hi all
I want to fit a drain plug to the transom on my Ocean, so I can leave it out when its sat on its trailer and it wont fill up with rain water(AGAIN).
But what I really want is a combination of the two images below. (Yes I know they are different materials, but I'll have all Brass or all Stainless.)
A proper through Hull tube that can be sealed in well, but with a screw in bung in the outer end. I don't want one of those silly little plastic jobs, that won't go right through the Transom.
I haven't been able to find one anywhere, and am thinking I'll have to fire up the lathe, and get the screw cutting gears out. Has anyone seen one for sale anywhere?
Thanks
Nasher.

Have a look at this:- http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18306
Does the brass transom bung in the pic do the trick?

Matt Hi.
It's on the right lines, but I'd really like the tube to go right through the transom so I can seal around it properly, and the bung to be flush.
I'll bear it in mind though.
Thanks
Nasher.

Try a water filler or toilet pumpout fitting as fitted to narrowboats like this

Why not use the stainless one, or equiv. and whack a standard tapered wood bung( ( on short lanyard) in it. Simple and has worked for a couple of hundred years and probably will for the next couple. Sorry to be so old fashioned.

I seem to remember some of the pics that Jono Garton posted of one of their new ribs, had a brass bung in it, may be worth asking him?

How about a water tank filler for a yacht? Same kind of thing as Rick said but probably easier to get on the South coast.

Hugh Jardon fitted a nice looking stainless one to his Vipermax - it's shown in his build thread.
Edit - here you go, half way down the page: http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11902&page=20

Thanks all.
HJ's looks good, but some of the pictures show a raw edge inside the hull as it doesn't go all the way through, as mentioned I want a complete tube to go through the transom so there is no way water can get inside the transom ply or laminates.
I'll have a better look at the water filler idea matt but they may be too big a diameter.
I know I'm being fussy, but I know what I want, and will probably end up making it in my lathe if I can get a big enough lump of brass.
As for the wooden bung idea, Not for me I'm afraid.

I'd try ASAP Supplies - they do Perko and Vetus lines and might have something.

Hi, thanks for that.
I had looked at these but didn’t fancy having the lever on the outside of the boat.
My bilge well is a little awkward to get to because of the bench seat and enclosed transom, so can’t really have the lever on the inside.
I’m also paranoid about it coming out and would trust a screw in bung more.

Yes agreed - a screw in type is better and I certainly wouldn't want the bung on the outside. I was tentatively thinking of fitting a plastic collar through the hull (so no issues with water ingess to transom) then fit one of those screw in bungs (mentioned someone in the links on this thread) that Ribcraft use. With that in place it would be more secure than the plastic bung. I liked the idea of the self bailer as an additional water stop! Still haven't been down to the boat tho to measure the diameter of collar on metal bung to see if it would fit!
I'll let you know if I come up with any better solution!
Al

Eventually found almost exactly what I wanted from a new company to me,
Aquafax.
http://www.aquafax.co.uk/html/produc...s.asp?ID=12449
The bigger one has a thread length of 66mm which is ideal for a 2 inch transom, although I'd have prefered a flush cap.
