Trip to Isle of Scillies and rib insurance geographical cruising range
I am planning a trip to the Isle of Scillies for the Summer and want to know if my policy geographical range will cover me (Inland and Coast Waters of the United Kingdom up to 12 miles). The rhumb line distance from Lands End to the Eastern edge of St Mary's using my GPS mapping makes it 23.4nm ie 12nm from UK mainland and 12nm from UK Isle of Scilly would seem to be ok with my current policy geographical limit. What is the experience of Ribnet members?

As the Scillies are part of the UK then you are probably covered, but it would be worth checking and if not then it would be interesting to know their reasoning.

My querying it was the 12nm limit. If I were to cross Lyme Bay it easily possible to travel more than 12nm "offshore" although obviously going from one part of the UK to another.

When I have planned to do trips in excess of the 12nm, such as the IOM trip & Alderney, I have called my insurance company and never had a problem with them giving me the OK and for no extra cost.
I use Porthcawl and have to say they are always very good.

Will do.
Never landed on Scillies, only near contact was having to retire from a two handed yacht race in 2008 just off Crim Rocks in a F9 (RTYC Triangle) on Kinsale to Treguier leg.

The 12 mile limit for territorial waters will be measured from a straight baseline. Under UNCLOS: for example & generally speaking, on an indented coastline the headlands will be joined by a line, this is the point from which the 12 mile territorial water will be measured ie the straight baseline, inside this line is deemed to be internal waters, beyond this 12 mile limit is the contiguous zone. The Isles of Scilly may well be joined to the mainland by straight baselines for the establishment of territorial waters, so effectively a trip to the Scillies might well be through internal waters.
Google straight baselines act UK & you will probably find the coordinates for the straight baselines, I have seen it for Ireland.

I wanted to know if i stoped over night at Alderney say due to bad weather,
Am i covered
Porthcrawl said that i would have to email them to let them deside, but how would i do this at the weekend if there office was closed
Grey Area ?
Other thing was, just paid renewal and they wanted to know the max speed rating for the boat as if its over 50kts they will not cover it
i said that with my 250 Yamaha full tank etc the chance would be a fine thing but that i know the hull is capable of a lot more than 50 kts
where dose that leave me
Thank god never had a probleam so no claims, but it dose make you think

Roy - I believe Porthcawl are open 7 days. No one would suggest it is unreasonable to divert to an alternative port / safe haven in the event of poor weather, even if that takes you over some imaginary boundary line - indeed it would be good seamanship. But if you want this to be an option just email them before you leave on the trip stating this is your contingency.
In terms of 'design speed' then I believe they mean the maximum speed you are likely to achieve with the engine you are using, rather than how fast can the hull go if you add enough horses. However if you're not happy with the cover / level of understanding you get from them then there are other brokers out there.
