Tube Repair on a Tornado

Hi,
Sorry to bother you all with a question that may have been asked before.

My tubes are not leaking air but on a certain patch of the tube a rope has worn down onto it and exposed the material. What is the best method of repair for this problem.
Also more material is exposed where the tube joins onto the hull again not leaking, but patches will not adhere to the two different surfaces. But this may be down to the fact that i am not sure if the tubes are PVC or hypalon. How can i tell?

Look forward to replies

Cheers Scott.

The question shouldn't be whether the tubes are PVC or Hypalon, but wether they are PU or Hypalon?

All new Tornados nowadays have PU (Polyurethane) tubes. These can be be recognised easily as they retain there colour and shine, whereas Hypalon fades and dulls with age.

I posted detailed gluing info back along here:

Also try contacting Laurence Lock at Barnet Marine (info@ribs.co.uk). He knows everything there is to know about Tornados.

Stick on some wear patches under the rope.

But make sure you know what material it is BEFORE you stick.

if its only wear patches you need to stick on and not structual repairs use hypalon and bostik2402 or an equivalent neoprene based glue whether the tubes are pu or hypalon . if you look at the welded pu tubes you will see that the rubber fittings are all glued on .i have just retubed a 1999 5.8mtr tornado and the main seam under the rubbing strake , valve patches , baffles and all external fittings are glued it is only the circumferential joints that are welded . if you need more help call me on 07815 144269

Paul

Is it true that on an older PU tube, a glued repair is pretty hard to do?
