I wonder if I’d chicken out before or after it chine walked?

It’s not top speed I need, more about being able to 1. Adjust trim to suit the load and conditions as she can be a bit wet up front; 2. Help to keep the cruising speed up in rougher water with a heavy load; 3. if it makes towing an inflatable more realistic I’m sure the kids will not object!
The 10 horses will sort that all out poly but consider propping too on my set up I have three props 10,11,12 inch pitch 11 being the standard I found with the 11 & 12 apart from a drop in speed around 2 knots with the 12 nothing much to add but the 10 made a huge difference in handling in the rough and caring weight with very good performance all round and getting the engine up to max RPM and fast hole shot as you say top speed is low on the list as not many folks prolong it in other than perfect conditions.

Poly, see if you can find a 4 blade prop for whichever engine you end up with. Might be difficult on an engine of that size, but Solas may do one. They tend to keep the bow up & hook in the stern, they offer better grip when it’s lumpy.

And if he 'finds' a rock and takes a blade off...
He'll still have a 3 blade prop

I seem to recall that one of our number had a 4 blade on a 20 Honda which was doing very well at one of the Scottish SIB Gatherings. Will PTT I might be brave enough to put a stainless prop on it!

Nice one P. She'll go well with it and I bet the range figures remain similar - if you don't lose the run of yourself. Too much power can go to a man's hand.

He probably suggested them because Poly was shopping for a long shaft.

Poly, are Mercury still rebadged TooHotSues in that HP range?

Tim, I did give some consideration to them - the price was very tempting but the high hours was a bit of a downside, and the distance adds more cost. There was a low hours tohatsu with 5 more HP at a dealer 40 miles from home, who are offering to fit it for me at a sensible cost (I fitted the previous one so know it’s not rocket science, but it would take me a full day).

Willk, the power head specs (volume, target max rpm, alternator output etc) are certainly the same. I’ve not done much digging - but the current Merc/mariner 30hp seems to have a different gearbox ratio from the current tohatsu.

OK, blood sugar recovered...

So everything came together today for a fairly calm water test.

WOT, well trimmed she's sitting at bang on 5750 RPM, and my phones says we maxed out at 26.0 knots (inland water - no tide) with a 9.9x11 aluminium prop. Gearbox ratio is 1:1.92 so I make that a < 10% slip, so I'm happy with that. The recommended rev range is: 5250-6250. So its probably about as good as I am going to get (not that I'm complaining) with a 3 blade aluminium prop.

This was measured in pretty much the lightest load she will ever see (it might be 50kg lighter but nothing more than that for any real time).

It will be used with about 100kg more weight on board (and v. occasionally 150 kg).

I don't know much about stainless and or 4 blades so would I see any benefit (whole shot is fine in todays loading too) from?

S/S 4 blade Solas 10x10 looks like its about £220 delivered by the time its imported from the US.
I can get a "POWERTECH SRA" 10x10 that would cost a bit over £300 delivered from Oz.
Aluminium 4 blade Solas "Amita" 10x11, about £100 delivered

Or do I just stick to standard to standard issue 3 blade ali props at c. £100 each. I'd generally take a spare prop on any long trip / week away so I'm not stuffed if I find the bottom the hard way. So a purchase is forth coming either way.
