Vat

OK then, its gone down 2.5%! great.
Any ideas which chandlerys have actually reduced their prices? - Seen 2 online that are advertising 15% VAT, but same inc VAT prices as last week when VAT was shown as 17.5%
Looking for some fishing kit and some Dubarrys.
Suggestions on who is keeping the 2.5% and who is passing it on ?

Aren't the prices set, then VAT added on?

I always see the UK stuff listed as a price +VAT.

Aladdin's Cave were doing a promotion on Dubarrys last week, picked up a pair of the full leather jobbies for just under £145 - you need to sign up for their loyalty card but there is no obligation on anything with that.

Possibly cheaper deals on-line but wife needed to try them on!

Alternatively, and closer for you, I noticed that Pascale Atkey in Cowes had them at something like 15% off list - I have a feeling that there are a number of places doing this.

Anyway, cheaper than the 2.5% VAT off!

Shamrock Quay can also be very good for gear like this. Give them a ring - you could have a pleasant surprise. They also have a loyalty card scheme where you get a cheque back at the end of the year.

jky,
Generally in the UK, consumer goods are listed at the price inclusive of VAT, whereas business to business transactions normally quote the price excluding VAT, as most businesses are able usually able to reclaim the VAT. Sometimes people who's business is mixed between B2B and B2C will use the ex VAT price as its a more attractive "headline rate". Anyone quoting you for export to the US should be quoting the ex VAT price as exports are exempt.

Hi Guys

My first post!, i work in Shamrock Chandlery in Southampton, mainly on the website side of things, we have altered all our prices by 2.5% on the tills but not on the ticket price as this would be a logistical nightmare! , Following from an earlier post we also have our Boat Owners Card which can earn you up to 12.5% discount which is reedemable via a credit check at the end of the season,

Regards

Matt

Thanks. I'm not really up on your tax laws (or mine, for that matter.)

Presumably he took your advice and edited whatever objectionable comment he left, as his post above doesn't look too offensive.

I suggested elsewhere that he should THINK before posting on these forums...perhaps its slowly beginning to sink in.

I don't think he's as selective as you think!

On behalf of K4+ we have not changed prices yet - but most will have to be going up again.

Most of our equipment is fairly specialist and imported and as such the slide against the dollar, euro etc has had a far worse effect. Shipping generally is dollar based too.

I think we were in the minority when we brought prices down when the pound was stong against the dollar.

In my limited view I see the whole VAT reduction as a bit of a joke. Personally I would rather retailers (the sort I spand cash with anyway) keep the 2.5% rather than it go to the govt ! Its the same price for me either way. Lets be fair boating is whatever you say a 'fun hobby' for most & that we all know it will cost us cash.

The only price drop I have actually seen is my coffee costs 88p now instead of 90p . WOW ! what a vote grabber ! - on this basis I will a labour supporter for life ! All those 2p add up to an amount I wont ever notice even if I tried really really hard !

I'm still being screwed on petrol & deisel / council tax / imcome tax / national insurance / insurance tax etc. And for all this I get :

ill if I have to go into hospital , crap roads , crap local services ( mostly) , an MOD who get given peanuts to buy the sort of gear of forces deserve , corrupt politicans ( all parties ) , and a huge wad given to some upper class family ! ( rant over )

PS - not sure why people get so worked up about Nos posts ! Can anyone explain ( without just having a go)
