VHF certificate

Now that my bigger RIB is nearly up and running, and I'm planning on going further afield, I'm convinced a VHF in the boat will be a good idea, especially as I'll have my kids with me a lot.

Can anyone recommend a course near Portsmouth to get a certificate, or give any other advise?

I've been looking in Practical boat owner and will probably go for a fixed set around £150.

Thanks

Simon.

I did my SRC in March at Havant College. £35 + £22 exam fee. 7 students - 1 day. Excelent value.
It might be that they only run them over the winter.

Tutor/examiner was from Portsmouth, he may be worth contacting.

We run monthly SRC/VHF Courses, they last a day and are generally at weekends, dates are avaliable on the website http://www.stormforce.biz

Priced at £65 training cost and £20 RYA certifictae fee we can not compete with the college but are cheaper than the vast majority of RYA schools in the area.

Training is on real VHF/DSC (transmitters removed) radios with no more than two students per set. We do not use the cheap computer simulators favored by many schools and have a 100% pass rate. Courses are generally run from our classroom in Southampton on the River Itchen.

Hope this is useful

I notice you interests are......

"tearing around" !

Whilst recently taking my Level II in Pwhelli, North Wales with Jono Gorton of www.Professional-Powerboat-Training.co.uk I joined up with a load of chaps from your neck of the woods which, at first glance I thought rather strange as it would have been a hell of a lot easier for them to take a course on the South coast as opposed to a trip North for the weekend.

When I questioned them further they advised that rather than do a course in their local neck of the woods, why not take advantage of doing it somewhere that they'd not normally get to visit if towing their own boats. Further, it was a good opportunity to get a few of the lads together for a "lads weekend" away from the dragons whilst also putting faces to names from the forum.

So Nasher, based upon you "interests" why not get a couple of lads together and come up to North Wales for the weekend, see the sights, meet a few of the lads (Jono Gorton - Jono - MeMe - Ian - Ian Jones - Dave Manning) to name but a few and take your course up here. You could always couple it with the PBL2 or intermediate course.

I'm sure if you speak to Jono Gorton he's put a decent package together for you.

Just a thought......

Took my course at Lee-on-Solent GAFIRS, about the same money as the college course but you know that the £35 is going to the Station, you can also have a snoop around as have a look at the rescue RIBs and also discuss safety issues like flares and find out first hand why coastgaurds hate Radio checks Andy
