Vipermax 7.5 or Scorpion 7.5 ?
Hi, I have a Vipermax 6.5 ( 2005) with a 200 HPDI Yamaha outboard. It seats 5 easy for a fast ride. I bought it just for fun and its great for me however the family finds it too small and not comfortable enough for cruising. So I am looking for an upgrade for ex 7.5m with a good harmony between fast riding & comfortable cruising. I have seen pictures of Scorpion 7.5 which meets what I am looking for however the Scorpion price has made me somewhat unwell. The Vipermax design ( console etc) looks a little bit outdated compared the Scorpion
What do you think Vipermax 7.5 or Scorpion 7.5 ?

I think you've put it in a nutshell when you said the Scorpion price makes you unwell. They are immaculately turned out boats with impeccable handling at sea but they do cost a lot.
there is nothing wrong with the Osprey hull in fact it is very good but very few boats have the look of the Scorpion.
you can resell the Scorpion for a high portion of original cost but the Ospreys hold there value fairly well also.
If you like the ride of the Osprey I'd go for that if you like the look and the ride of the Scorpion you'd beter get the guilders out

There are several console options available on an Osprey. Mine has the Low Discovery model which I think looks the business. It is quite wide though.

If a 2nd hand Scorpion would be available which would meet my needs , I would consider it, but there are not so many "new" Scorpions about. What do you think ?

I'm kind of fond of my guilders, so I have difficulty parting with them, however I dont see many second hand Osprey's nor Scorpions on the market. They are limited to a few. Revengers & Ribeye's I see alot. Why is this ?

The only thing that bothers me with the Osprey console is that is is so low, I prefer to be able to stand behind it. The more modern consoles ( like with Capelli) are much higher and you can stand or sit behind them.

Revengers get rced a lot so they get sold after racing fairly frequentky and also they have been around for a long time but they are well made
I think Ribeyes didn't have very good build quality (in fact it was awful) a while ago. I think this kinda starts to show up a few years after purchase and people want to lose them. Also they have a very good marketing effort so they sell quite a few o first time buyers.
I think there is a 7.5 Scorpion for sale on this forum with an old mercury 2 stroke. and it's not too dear. you could always buy it and re engine. Also if you have the guilders there are two newer and superb Scorps for sale Gelignite (Mark Wildey) and one from the north of the country belonging to Qcamel which is an 8.1 stepped hull with a 225 Opti

Thanks for the info. I'd be interested to get some more details on the 2 Scorpions for sale that you mentioned. Could you let me know how I could contact the owner(s) ?

to be honest its unfair for me to comment i have only done 3 hrs with it , treading carefully with new engine, but cant say that i was hammerd by wind or spray,,,all the angles and screen height appear to be correct... i preferd it to the low console option they have, and as the pic shows there is more than enougth room for all the electrical goodies.
stood up its about chest level and i am 6ft.
this pic may show it better prior to me bending the screen, gives you a better idea of height when sitting down, its also very easy to increase screen height . more so for me as we work with acrylics all day long

You think so. They wont the 1995 sport Boat of the Year and obviously showed off the glass trophy at the LBS in Jan 96. They also showed a 4 foot stern section of there rib hull. Don't have a problem with this as costs for displaying at LBS are high, what I do have a problem with is the quality of the hull section they showed particluarly at a boat show. Ply wood didn't meet the deck very well and grp was both thin and rough. Still the lack of weight in materials would produce a fast hull which some may want. I do hope they have improved since.

I know that Niels has a 23 foot revenger for sale with a brand new 225 optimax behind it.
Thought that he is asking 31000 euro's. Boat is from 2002 or 2003.

Dutch, considering the number of Vipers made since 1992 very few appear on the market; which must say something about the owners views of the boats certainly my 5.95 Viper was the one rib I regret selling, superbly balanced and gave a great feeling of confidence when the weather turned nasty. Why not ask to borrow a 7.5m rib for a good sea trial.
The other thought would be to visit Ribex this year (end of May ?) to view some of the other options. For a buyer its a superb opportunity to test lots of boats over the same weekend. Write to each of the dealers beforehand so they know you are coming and can tell you apart from the rest of us tyre kickers.
