I’ve no idea what you are waffling about - hypothetical situations where private marinas are told which services they must offer to private customers in a boating sector that no government gives two hoots about. The op however lives in the real world so if he wants to do big trips on a big rib in the nicer parts of our waters he’ll want to take it into account. He might decide he’s mostly going to be in really busy areas and buy petrol or that he’ll tow his boat and fill it ashore like most people here.

With respect there was a very real chance that we were going to lose the ability to use red diesel in boats (Northern Ireland has lost it?). As it happens the government reversed the decision at the last minute.

If that decision had gone ahead, it would have been as difficult to buy white diesel at marinas as it is to buy petrol.

I would have some of the reason for the non-availability of petrol in marina's is due to the safety issues surrounding the storing of it.

Surely depends who the marina's sell the most fuel to (at the greatest profit) - if that's leisure users the tanks would get cleaned and be white in a fortnight, if its commercial users - then the benefit is lost for leisure users, unless the marina is big enough to offer both (its a lot simpler to sell diesel so if you have two tanks and pumps you could). As it happens the government have kicked the issue down the road - so its a non-issue (in Britain) - PITA for N.Irish boats, and potential issues for British boats going to Ireland.

Agree. It would be interesting to see how many primarily commercial marinas would bother with separate white tanks.

I accept the point that diesel is a lot easier to store than petrol.

I think it would depend how many high paying WAFI customers they might lose - they might not buy a lot of diesel, but they spend a lot on other stuff!

A heartfelt thank you to all that have contributed. The advice on which diesel rib to purchase has been illuminating, the debate around Red/White diesel & marina provision of fuels has been an an added bonus!
Think I may now have something lined up, some further discussion this week but it’s looking positive.
Thanks again all.
