Bit lost there Nos, it hooks into the engine at the back in two equal halves, comes together at the front, like a clamshell I guess, spring to hold the two parts together and then a flap to hide the spring. And it is plastic.

One side is very scorched inside and a tad burnt in places from a small fire :-) Guess this doesn't help with identification, but its accurate.

I'm hoping to strip the engine down this weekend, (if the weather warms up above -5) I've taken the serial number off the engine, and searched numerous sites in an effort to get a year so I can buy the right manual.

Its looking to me like its 1986ish, (no wonder its reached end of life) can anyone help or confirm for me?

Its a mariner 75hp serial no is 9483086
http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/609774 seems to confirm its about 1986

RIBase
I think you're going to be very lucky if you don't have to change powerheads or buy a new engine-it'll probably be a lot cheaper.

Thanks for the confirmation re year and the PM Nos, I'll post an update when the investigations have commenced. I'm preparing myself for a new engine.

Timing is a tad off as I'm getting married in 5 weeks and any diversion of cash will have a very dim view taken I suspect :-)

So a boat fund will need to be set up in the new marital home if a new engine is the outcome.

Regards all

Are you marrying an Oldham girl? I did, and have found an argument that works with her most of the time - just tell her it will be a lot safer (and if/when you have kids the effect seems to be 10x stronger)
