What Action Camera?
Does anyone know what camera to go for?
I have been looking at the GoPro and the Drift x170.
I would like to mount it on my A-frame.
Thanks

I run a Go-pro HD - very impressive bit of kit, use it on my RIB and Ski, takes fantastic pics at 75mph, bouncing round, wave jumping - dos'nt phase it. If you watch the likes of top gear your'll see many Go-pros clamped to cars inside and out

i have an oregon scientific atck9 (i think thats it) it dos a nice job on my sailing skiff, for us the main draw was that it has a gps chip in it that links to google maps so we can see how fast we were going and the route taken, good for training being able to see what makes a difference in speed etc.

Thanks for the info, at the moment the gopro looks by far the best however the Drift x170 is only £99 and has an LCD screen to line up the shot and it also comes with quite a few mounts etc.
I would like to get this up and running for Priory Bay so looking to order in the next few days and I'm tempted to go for the Drift x170?

Go-Pro - The pure fact that currently 70 TV shows are using it for Broadcast quality tv is enough recommendation for anyone. If you watch "deadliest catch" on discovery a lot of that footage is filmed on a go pro.
here is some footage I took last month

I am also thinking about the same sort of thing but a little vague on exactly what you need to specify in the way of extra mounts or what is included with the various cameras and the ones that seem to be listed mostly seem to be to fix to surfboards etc or small diameter tube like handlebars?
I'd need it to fix to a 2 inch A frame so assume a handlebar mount will be no use? I'd also like to be able to dunk it over the side to have a go at filming dolphins/whales etc underwater so a smaller mount that would allow it to be fixed to something like a boathook would be good. What would you need to order to get this? I've only got about a week left before I go home so haven't really got time to get it wrong.
I don't want to spend a lot of money and am not bothered about full HD 1080p as it takes up a vast amount of space and my computer at home won't play it anyway! 720p would be fine so I'm also thinking maybe an X170 would be appropriate and there is also a Stealth X5 HD which is tiny. Can you buy these in the high street anywhere so I could go and have a look at one?
Ta and apologies for the thread hijack but seems like we are both wanting to do the same thing

We have just received our hd170 before heading out on holiday a few weeks ago...... Very pleased with it. Considered the gopro but was put off by the lack of features and (IMHO) poor ergonomics...
The features that swung it for me with the Drift are 1) remote control (very, very usefull).....2) LCD screen which has been handy not to use as an aid to setting up the camera (as with a 170degree viewing angle it's difficult to not get it right) but for viewing the film afterwards and deciding to keep or delete....3) rotating lens which allows you to mount the camera anywhere and still get a perfect shot.
Only downside iv found so far with the drift is that it's only waterproof to .5 meters which is a shame but for 30quid you can get a cover which takes it down to 3 meters.
As someone previously mentionedm, spend the extra money and go for an hd version of whatever camera you go for though.. I only film in 720 mode (still hd though) since as Bogmonster quite rightly said, using full 1080 hd makes our old vaio laptop s@#t itself.....but even in 720, it's still pretty impressive, especially when you play it back on a big hd ready flat screen tv...
When I get back from all the rain and bad weather on this holiday ole upload a few shots of Gwenn Ha Gwer rounding the 'Raz de Sein' at full tide flow.... Reasonably impressive footage...

Hmm on further investigation it looks like the X170 is not actually "720p" which I think would be 1200x720, it is actually 720x480 which is 480p... probably a bit too low?

Hey Bogmonster
Yeah, think you would be disappointed these days with an x170.... HD is the future ... Laptops and pc's are evolving to cope with the demands of 1080p Hd footage which I suppose for now will become the 'norm'.....
Most camera's I looked at had the option of filming in a lesser resolution should you need to but it's nice to know that you have full Hd if required...
Oh and For those that haven't heard of it this is the 'Raz de Sein'... Gwenn ha gwer's summer playground

The 9,49 movie is with a Pov 1.5 Not HD. From 8 minutes the sun is from the right side.
The second movie is with a GoPro HD. (from the bow)

Good thread. I was just thinking about a cam when found its. As far as was able to compare on youtube, not much difference in picture quality between Drift HD170 and GoPro HD. But the remote and inbuilt LCD is nice on the HD170
Just found the HD170 at 199,99 including delivery at Amazon UK so was not able to resist....Think the better picture is worth a extra 100 compared to the now very cheap X170
Hope to upload some videos soon

Thanks for all the info here
I still haven't ordered one yet as I don't know if I really need the HD or not as I will only be using it for uploading edited movies to youtube and posting them on here.
So am I missing the point, do I only need a HD if I have a HD TV, fast laptop etc or is the HD model better quality even for youtube?
Great videos, keep them coming!

isnt it better to have HD and not need it than one day want it and never have it. Youtube does a pretty good HD job on 720p which it indicates is HD. Also you have Vimeo which I am sure broadcasts on HD
Another Vid - this time filmed on a Sony Handycam
