What is this?

Anyone any idea what this is?
Looks a bit homemade on the top half with funy bits on the bottom. Ans is it just me that has never seen right angles in tubes?

Looks like a Boston Whaler or Dell Quay Dory with tubes on! Love the console and plastic seat. Note it does say "inshore" use only

I've been told my 3m RIB is a "Blagg" - has the same sort of hull as that one.

But not half as funny as an Audi A4 with wind-up rear windows

I do not think it is any way a Blagg Rib.

From memory there were two Blagg designs, one called the Blagg Bosun and the other a Bosun's Mate, The Blagg Bosun was around the 5.5 metre mark and the Bosun's Mate was 2.75 metres.

Attached archive photos of both models

Blagg RIBs

To give the definitive info on these boats,

Yes there were two models of Blagg RIB

The smaller "Bosun's Mate" which was about 10ft and the 18ft "Blagg Bosun"

They were made in England, in limited numbers and subsequently in New Zealand, by Barlow Marine, the company of which I was the Production Manager.

I believe that only one set of moulds were ever made, certainly that was true of the Bosun, although Woody Blagg may have retained a Bosun's Mate mould in England.

We built quite a few "Mates", possibly 20, in New Zealand, but only a few Bosuns, possibly half a dozen, and stopped making them about 18 years ago.

They were both quite astonishing performers for their day, the Mate would run all day at 30knots on 25 horsepower and the Bosun was spectacular with a 90, it cornered like a Grand Prix Motorbike, you could pull about 2 "g" and it's straight line acceleration on to the plane was breathtaking.

The Bosun hull was a brilliant piece of design, and it seems a pity that it never went further. I would suspect that the mould still exists somewhere in New Zealand, if I can get hold of Paul barlow i will find out and post the info

Regards

Eric West

eric you are right that there was only one set of bosun moulds but there were two sets of bosuns mate moulds we made over 70 of them in england at henshaws .i can remember paul barlow coming over to england to see how they were made along with the tinker inflatables that we sent out in kit form for a period of time .the bosuns mate had to be one of the best little hulls ever made
