H-P, did you actually read that article?

RIBs have been banned in Gib for decades* - Spain is just following the UK lead: "The boats have been outlawed in Gibraltar since the 1990s over concerns they were used to smuggle tobacco."

* With notable exceptions!

"Ribs are cheap to purchase"......where the hell are they buying ribs from?????

No self respecting drug smuggler would dream of buying a rib....stealing one on the other hand.....

You’re looking at this wrong lads, there’ll be plenty kicking about the market cheap in Spain before the law comes into effect. Bonanza!

Hope Greece will not follow the same ideas

I saw news about 2x350 RIB full of drugs from Albania to Corfu ...
And this is the area where I'm going to be this year and will smuggle only water and family members ...

It's a big issue for them. RIBs are GREAT drug runners and there are a number of companies in Europe and Beyond catering for the runners precise needs. Contrary to what some here have posted, they pay top dollar for their boats and boat builders in the UK have done time for selling to them.

Of course they will. They will just graciously disappear into retirement.

Encouraged by the undoubted success of this policy, why don't the Spanish also ban bulls to stamp out bull fighting...?

Will be interesting to see how this pans out. How on earth are they going to enforce it with tens of thousands of RIBs in Spanish waters. Not to mention the thousands on the back of large yachts coming in and out.

The restriction in Gibraltar only applies to RIBs over 6m LOA and I'd guess that the Spanish will do something similar. It will obviously still affect a lot of boats, but smaller RIBs will make up the bulk of the market. I'm not sure how it would fit with EU regulations though.

As for enforcing it, in Gibraltar they confiscated them and cut them up with chainsaws.

The drugs runners will just use something else, whilst the law abiding lose out as usual.

Will we see an influx of cheap 6.5-8m ribs then quite a few owned by ex pats? Is a hard boat like a bow rider that much worse for smuggling
