What to look out for
Hi All,
Have decided to sell everything I own and buy a RIB!! LOL
Seriously, going to look at a BWM 6.1 with a 1995 Mariner 150 2 Stroke.
Can anyone advise on what I should be wary of, looking for, avoiding etc??
Many thanks!!
Chris

Is it a old teck with carburetters?
If so then yes, if a Opti max then not so bad!

If its a 1995 it wont be an Opti so assume its a 2 stroke carb and yes it will be fairly thirsty. (9 gph plus at flat out). I think the boat will be a Deepsea 21 which is actually around 6.3m. They are very beamy, stable RIBs with a good ride for a baot of their size. However, build quality of BWM's was shall we say, a little variable, over the number of iterations of the company. Check carefully for structural damage - major cracks and whether the deck still has its integrity. You may find that consoles, seats, grab rails etc may show cracking around them. (I had a BWM DS21 1998 where the hull was solid as a rock but everything fixed to it fell apart one way or another.)
HTH,
Alan

Be wary of buying from a friend. He'll continually bemoan the fact that he ever sold you the boat and then make ridiculous requests such as: "Could you pack it up and send it over to Newfoundland for me?"
Seriously, in buying our boat we also made two very good friends so you may get more than you bargain for!

Im assuming this is the said boat: BWM
I bought my boat from this guy, search for all my posts to see what problems I have had with it, I have nearly spent what I payed for it!
Regards
Alex

Louise you forgot to add that when you are so foolish as to invite the former owner out on your new boat you'll never get a chance to drive it yourself for the rest of that day!

What about this - A Pacific 22 - people on here love them - being sold by a really helpful buch!!! Won't be very fast with a 140hp diesel but will be cheap to run.

Hi Alan,
Out of interest I ran my 150 Optimax flat out for a short while last weekend to see what the consumption was - 60 litres/hour
So even the new technology stuff still gets through it when pushed.
22 litres/hr at 25 knots though
Duncan

Duncan, Yeah that sounds about right. I've run both a 150 Opti (we re-engined our BWM) and a 200 Yam HPDI and they both drink as much or almost as much fuel as a carb/efi 2 stroke at WOT. The difference is that with an Opti and smartguages you can see how much money you are burning per hour whereas with an old tech engine its not until you come to refuel that you get the nasty shock!
The rule of thumb for old 2 stroke outboards in around 9gph per 100hp so a 150hp would be nearer 14gph. Thats a scary figure and I didnt want to put Lasermatrix off!

hehehe, thanks for that Alan.
Well, I went a had a viewing, needless to say, I won't be buying it.
Too many things to list... but some of the more nasty ones...
1) Large Chunk missing from keel, repairable, but not nice to see on viewing.
2) Numerous cracks in deck, repair job well, lets just say it looks like someone
threw on some marine filler and hoped for the best
3) Engine in fairly good condition, trim/tilt switch on engine, wires snipped off
4) Nice fuel guage on console, pity the wires have been snipped off and can't
locate them anywhere
5) Deck very soft by front locker, possible signs of osmosis in floor?
6) Transom has cracks
7) Numerous holes all over console
8) No other instrumentation except non working fuel guage (ok, has nav
equipment)
9) Lots of wiring hanging out of remotes, possibly intrumentation, but I had
pretty much made up my mind by then!!
Now I know why it was only £7500!
Still, never mind, keep looking, maybe I'll hang on till the end of the season and see if anything comes up then!
Thanks for all the tips tho, certainly helped a lot!
Cheers
Chris
