Safety
As you can probably imagine, safety is a key element of racing and cruising. In addition to the testing, scrutineering and equipment that have to be carried, there are a dedicated group of RIB enthusiasts who give up their time and travel to races and other events all over the country with their boats. These people not only bring their boats, but years of experience, diving and medical skills (not to mention drinking ability!) and without whom many events on the water simply couldn’t take place.
The roles of these boats can be various:
- Course observers, ensuring that race boats actually pass the course marks on the correct side as per race instructions.
- Marshalling spectator boats that have inadvertently wandered across the race line to a safe location to watch the race from
- In the case of an accident during the race, they move their boats to protect the stricken boat or crew and wave yellow incident flags to warn approaching race boats
- Acting in a true safety capacity by recovering crew (injured or otherwise) from the water, safely recovering crewmembers from inside canopied boats, towing boats that have broken down, or worse still are overturned or sinking safely to the nearest berth.
Whilst all safety boat crew will be required to have minimum level of first aid and paramedic training, professional doctors, paramedics and divers also form part of the safety fleet and are normally available to assist from somewhere on the course.
If you have a boat (RIB) and would like to take part in any of the above activities, please contact BIBOA. You can take part for a single race, a single location or even the whole season.
You will certainly get one of the best views on the course, make a lot of new friends and enjoy some lively evenings out!
