What's the significance of yer boat's name?

I was asked about the name of my boat (Verius) last weekend by a Coastie...

I explained that when I got my first boat (a 12.5' SIB) I had to register my little handheld VHF. The boat didn't actually have a name, so under "Name of Vessel" on the form, I wrote "Various"... as I figured I might be using the radio on several boats.

Over time, and three more boats, it kinda stuck. although I changed the spelling to seem more "regal". I tell people that "Verius" is actually Latin for "Rigged Hulled Inflatable"... I have yet to be corrected...

So how did you come up with your boat's name?

My boat's name is "INDE". If you do not understand the significance of that then ??????? Quit messing about in boats and take up tennis.

My girlfriend's - now wife - nickname is 'Dolly'.

Inflatable rubber boat therefore became - 'Rubber Dolly' - don't want to be appearing to be too serious and yachty.

My friends Tornado came with what we thought was a crappy name - 'Exeat'. Looked it up and it turned out its a latin word meaning 'permission for extended absence of leave' - for a bloke who's famed for being on holiday and never at work....perfect!

Nice one

Mines named after the place I met my wife. Kind of smoothed things over about me having the boat at home.

Dads boats named Bertone (mum calls the tender Ernie-too) after the designer, Brothers is Keehaa after the seagull that tells the Rabbits to piss off on watership down. It came with that name.

All mine bar one have followed on from my first SIB ( now owned by Dizzy Lizzy ) - A mate a a small tender known as ' The Bullet' ( due to its extreme lack of speed ) - I followed with ' Grey streak' - its grey and went just as slow.

Followed by;

White Streak ( Avon 310)
Streaker (Avon 4m )
Mini- Streak ( Bombard AX2)

and Nestor ( shearwater) - Already registered as this so thought it wasn't bad and is all about :

Nestor was an Argonaut, helped fight the centaurs, and participated in the hunt for the Calydonian Boar. He and his sons Antilochus and Thrasymedes fought on the side of the Achaeans in the Trojan War. Though Nestor was already old when the war began, believed to be about 110, he was noted for his bravery and speaking abilities. In the Iliad he often gives advice to the younger warriors, and advises Agamemnon and Achilles to reconcile. He is too old to engage in combat himself, but he leads the Pylian troops, riding his chariot, and one of his horses is killed by an arrow shot by Paris. He also had a solid gold shield. Homer frequently calls him by the epithet "the Gerenian horseman." At the funeral games of Patroclus, Nestor advises Antilochus on how to win the chariot race.

Not 100% sure how that links to the boat - but seems OK to me.

Can't beat a bit of Homer!Certainly a rich vein for boat names!and one I may look at next time.I think this thread may run for a while...and prove a bit of an 'insight' to Rib owners!

I think you might be right about that. Who knew these folks were so "deep"...

A friend named his SIB "Ego"... as in "Inflated".

Good thread!

Boat's name is Lochran - Gaelic for 'lantern' - should have a grave accent over the 'o'.

My grandfather was the captain of one of the ships that used to service the navigation bouys on the Clyde, in the days before solar power and batteries when they were oil(?) fired lamps. Back in the 30's/40's I guess. Anyway, the boat was called the 'Torch' and because most of the navigation crew were Gaelic speakers, the ships' tender was called 'Lochran' - so keeping a tradition going!

Fascinating to see how others have approached the question though!

I've always had a childish interest in pirates, reading any books I can get about them.

Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, had a ship called 'The Queen Annes Revenge' and I wanted to name the RIB using a play on words of that. As I've been known as Nasher since I was a kid, I came up with:-
'The Nashers Revenge'. Obvious really.

More recently It's also a two fingered salute, saying I've still got it, despite everyone that has made me redundant or taken advantage over the last 3 years.

Nasher

I named the boat I have at the moment after an Island in the summer Isles off the west coast of Scotland called Priest Island which I have looked out onto for many years since I was a boy. I couldnt ever access it, untill I was old enough to afford my own rib and my boats name is a perfect anogram of the Islands' name
