I've stickied for now. We generally don't like to sticky too much indefinitely so after a month or so I will bump it over the FAQ's section.

On a serious note on a very serious subject...

Kill cords are often ignored in Brazil also...truthfully, almost always.

No details of crew/passengers mentioned in the comments. No mention of kill cords either.

Those lads on the CG/Rescue/Copcraft have done that before! Very smooth catch - still, the jump between craft is easier when you're not encumbered with a heavy Health & Safety Document, helmet or PFD...

Make sure you test your kill cord!

We always use it, but late summer 2016 the kill cord got pulled..and nothing happened.

having it repaired before heading back to the water.

Kill cord

That's worrying. Do you know what the fault was?

The Zodiac is in the shop getting some upgrades and this repair.

I'll post when I know the issue...

Update: Turns out the Kill Cord did work, but the switch was sticky and sometimes the button wouldn't pop out after pulling the lanyard. Sticky enough to stay in the running position. So I just replaced the entire switch ignition assembly.

Also something I didn't know and just learned: after pulling the kill cord and the engine shuts off, you CAN restart the motor without the lanyard attached.

I thought that pulling the cord was like an off switch and won't allow the motor to be restarted, but that's false.

Once the kill cord has been pulled, the motor turns off, but the motor is able to be restarted. This makes sense: if the captain goes overboard taking the lanyard with them and is unable to be recovered, the crew is still able to restart the motor.

My engine is older - 1998 Johnson two cylinder 50 hp.

I hope this information helps anyone when testing their kill cord.

Thats not how it should be, at least on a modern kill switch, some have a toggle switich can be flipped back up into the on position, but to my knowledge, none can just be restarted without intervention.

Not so on most, my crew has a kill cord and I have a spare, within hand reach but too far away to just clip on.

You can start earlier Evinrudes without the KC. If the KC is fitted when the engine is started, pulling the KC stops the engine. If the engine is started without the KC, it err! Doesn't .

Thats why i included the words "modern" & "most". I just wanted to ensure the complete picture was there.

Not sure where you guys are getting this info, but I can tell you that is not how the kill cord switch operates on my '91 Evinrude 6 HP. On this model it's a simple Stop/Run switch located on the tiller handle... when the Tether Cord clip is pulled from the switch, the switch directs the ignition module output to 'ground', stopping the ignition system, which then stops the motor. The motor can also be stopped without pulling the clip from the switch, by simply pushing and holding the button in on the switch until the motor stops.

However, the ignition circuit remains 'grounded' whenever the clip is not installed onto the switch post and so the motor will not restart, unless the clip is re-installed onto the switch post. The operation of the stop switch is covered in the Ignition System section of the OMC factory service manual.

Ownership experience & I'm talking binnacle fixture, not tiller mount.

As far as I'm aware it applies to current Evinrude mechanical controls, sidemount & binnacle mounted.

My 2011 E-TEC will certainly restart by just pushing the key back in half an inch. I prefer that - if somebody needs to do it in a hurry to come and fish me out of the oggin, I'd rather they came and picked me up than looked for the spare killcord in the console.

It does have a weakness in that an idiot could just take it off and use it with no killcord, but as I don't let idiots drive my boat I don't regard it as a negative
