10-12 miles from the shore is quite a way in a small boat. I think you are kidding yourself on if you think anyone on shore is going to see a flare at that distance and respond to it, unless it’s dark, good visibility, and there’s something like a coastwatch station pointing your way. A rocket flare is visible for something like 40s, but at 10 miles it will be much less, if someone who knows happens to be looking.

You might be unlucky with your bay, but usually you can get more than a few miles range, because the CG mast has some serious height. All local shipping will also hear a mayday. I do notice an improvement with my fixed vhf though, even mounted on a pole about 2m above sea level.

If I was going that distance alone on a regular basis then I think a PLB would definitely be on my shopping list.

Got to agree with Poly on this.

I'd expect you to get more than 3 miles with the DSC function. And a DSC alert will sound an alarm anywhere it reaches. Unlike a flare.

If fixed set was an option I'd be adding that for that sort of operation. If not the PLB. Actually - both!

Agree vhf better on you than stowed, that’s how I found out it ran out of battery as once splashed the bloody strobe started and didn’t stop till the battery did... not found a way to turn the auto operation off....
Icom M93 - see Page 58 of the manual.
SH HX870 - see Page 98

SH851 maybe due a new battery.... cheaper than a new pack of pyro....

Current safety policy is based on safety in numbers, minimum of 3 vessels that way 2 separate issues everyone is still safe it’s 24 miles across to Devon being in the middle completely out of sight of land is an interesting experience.... especially when you stop very very easy to get turned around..... GPS and compass are a must....
